1781: The siege of Yorktown (Sept 28 - Oct 19) was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in North America, and led to the surrender of Cornwallis and the capture of both him and his army. The Continental Army's victory at Yorktown prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.

1783 AD - September 3 – Peace of Paris: A treaty between the United States and Great Britain is signed in Paris, formally ending the American Revolutionary War, in which Britain recognizes the independence of the United States; and treaties are signed between Britain, France, and Spain at Versailles, ending hostilities with the Franco-Spanish Alliance.

Oct 29: Mozart's Don Giovanni, regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time, premieres in the Estates Theater in Prague. The story goes that he completed the overture of the opera the night before its premiere.

The revolutionary authorities called the queen the Capet's Widow, which was not accurate as the Capetian line had broken with the death of Fhilip the IV and his sons, which started the Hundred Years War.

1793 King Luis XVI is executed. His son, still a boy, Luis XVII, died in prison, but Luis XVIII returned to the throne.

1795 The British Navy defeated twice the French, one time off the coast of Brittany and the second at Genoa, Italy. This will continue all along the war. France will be many times victorious on land but will lose at sea.

1798 - June 18 – The first of the four Alien and Sedition Acts, the Naturalization Act of 1798, is signed into law by U.S. President Adams, requiring immigrants to wait 14 years rather than five years to become naturalized citizens of the United States. On June 25, another law is signed authorizing the imprisonment and deportation of any non-citizens deemed to be dangerous.

1799, Napoleon failed to create a French colony in the Middle East and fled Egypt, leaving behind his "heroic soldiers." Understandably, the French soldiers in Egypt don't appreciate his statements. Not so understandably, the French Directorate proclaims him a hero of the country. To thank them, the Corsican goes on to a coup d'état that overthrows the Directorate and proclaims him as First Consul.
