2019 Mentor Project!

#1 Post by Aurelin » Sun Oct 20, 2019 9:43 pm

Introducing the 2019 webDiplomacy Mentor Project!

We’ve learned from our own experiences and from feedback from our mentors that the webDiplomacy mentor program isn’t going too well - often, since we have nothing to follow along with, mentoring turns into answering a few questions, then nothing else. Per request, here is the official webDiplomacy mentor packet, modified from Durga’s guide written a couple of years ago.

The Mentor Project will be a little competition between mentees. Each week, mentors will come together to create or find a puzzle or challenge to do. This can be anything from one of the puzzles found here to a Diplomacy strategy video and application. We’re always open to suggestions on this! Students will get points based on how quickly they get the answer, whether the answer is right, and depending on the type of challenge, the discretion of the mentor team.

The team of mentors will be communicating over the mentors channel in the webDiplomacy Discord server. For obvious reasons, we can’t create our challenges over a forum thread, and PMs can be clunky and are problematic when they’re being sent to many people.

This is only once a week, and if you’re a registered active mentor, we expect you to participate with your student; If you can’t, let us know. If you don’t have a mentee but would like to help out, comment below! I’ll add you to the mentors channel to help us with the challenges, and if a mentor is unavailable, we can have you step in.

There are many aspects of this that I need your feedback on before we get started, so if you haven’t already, join our Discord server at: https://discord.gg/f2ram4w. I’ll give you the Mentor role, which gives you access to the locked channel we’ll be talking in. I may create a separate role called “Project” or something similar that also has access to the channel for those that don’t have mentees but want to help.

Shoutout to Claesar who’s helped a ton for this and run the program alone for a while!

The webDiplomacy mentor program was the reason I stayed on this website. Thanks for contributing to the community and I’m excited to work with you!

Week 1 Scores! Thanks Szpoti for scoring them.

Remember that while this is a competition, the reason we're doing this is so you can build a stronger connection to your mentor and solve challenges to help you get better at Diplomacy.

Competition between mentees themselves probably. Like in those military schools, after you graduate you get some rank compared to other students. The best student get the honor of being 1st in the class.

Then again there are those students that finish as 42nd in the class out of 52 total, but they are named Napoleon Bonaparte. Who was the first in his class I would like to know.

I apologize for posting here, but is it still possible to become a mentee?

I can say that this project is very useful, or maybe I got a great mentor. It was what saved me from being a political puppet forever. (And the gift but, it's another thing)

I have signed up for it but I don't have a mentor yet. Hopefully I get one as good as yours.

Should be possible, yes. Aurelia and Kitsune are very busy, but as soon as they are available they can find a mentor for you.

Hey guys, are we planning for a 2020 Mentor Project?

I have signed up as a Mentee in this thread, please advice.

Or if anyone willing to guide me over Private Messages, I would appreciate that as well. Thanks.

I applied, but have heard nothing back from anyone. Is this program still extant?

Is there anyone willing to help out now, outside of the program?
