New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
Didn't know there was a new forumA
Anyway, I have developed a new variant, which is on a temporary homepage, http://davidecohen.wixsite.com/diplomiscellany, since I am having a bit of trouble editing my main website. Please take a look. I would love to get comments, suggestions and criticism.
Its been a while since I have put a new variant out there, but I have a good excuse. I have been working on this brute! Its huge and has several unusual rules. Dawn of the Enlightenment is a global variant set in 1701, at the beginning of the Great Northern War and the War of the Spanish Succession. It has several Powers with possessions stretching around the world while others are compact, half strength units outside Europe, high seas provinces to foster fluidity on the map, and variable victory criteria so that smaller Powers have a reasonable chance of winning.

Interested enough to bump, but not interested enough to comment?
Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
Why water colours are different?
Are there any difference between coastal seas and offshore?

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
There is a difference. It is explained in the rules, which are on the map, but the large, darker blue provinces are High Seas Provinces. Multiple units can be located there simultaneously, and cannot be attacked there. Fleets in High Seas provinces can convoy though.
Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
Any limit for the number of fleets there, I'm sorry - I don't know why don't I read the rules.
I liked the variant.

No, there is no limit to the number of fleets a high seas province can hold.

I was looking at it, I like. I wanna look at it some more and chew the idea a bit. Kinda didn’t want it to fall by the wayside. Interested to see what others are thinking.

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
Okay, i think this looks very interesting. I however am worried it may be a bit too complicated for ease of implementation. For example, the half strength units and full strength units complicate things to the nth degree. I think i understand it, but i can see if i were playing this with other people, the processing time of each season being substantially longer for a f2f game; and it seems like that could translate to lots of mistakes by players in the game if it were in the online format. I do really like the concept and i even like the half-units. It gives depth to the play, but i'm worried its too complicated to get good games out of it consistently.
8/10 - Concept
5/10 - Practicality (based on rules and audience)

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
Oh I agree that these rules, as a group, are compiicated, but I didn't put in any I didn't have to! Seriously, I prefer to keep variant rules as close to Standard as possible.
The high seas province rule create a much more fluid game, and I feel they are necesssary, given the globe spanning empires of almost half of the Powers. I feel the various rules having to do with half strength Supply Centers are needed to help balance the large and small Powers as well as the European and Asian Powers; likewise the variable victory criteria.

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
I really like the high seas rule. Are there any other variants you know that have it? I agree that the half strengths units are solving a problem but I’m not sure it’s the least complicated way. (Not that i have an alternative)

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
I used a variation of this rule in my Conquest of the Americas variant. I believe that there are some similar rules out there.

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
One difference between the rule in that earlier variant and the rule here is that fleets in High Seas Provinces can now convoy.

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
I will be running a play by email playtest of this variant, at the comparatively leisurely pace of one game year every two weeks.
If you are interested, email me at zendip18AToptonlineDOTnet. Please include a Power preference list, or let me know you have no preferences. Be warned, I want dedicated players, so if I don't know you, I may require you to provide evidence of your reliability.

This variant looks like it will be a blast to play, and we have some very good players to test your skills against.

Re: New Variant: Dawn of the Enlightenment
We now have 13 confirmed playtesters with 1 more tentative, so we need 1 or 2 more players for a complete roster.
