Carnage 2018 Live Thread

#1 Post by Valis2501 » Sat Nov 03, 2018 3:31 am

Hello everyone!

Tonight was the start of the premier Vermont F2F tournament, held at Carnage in Killington, Vermont.

Here's the final center count sheet and board for my board. I shared it with some really good players, a player I never had the pleasure of playing with before, and at least one goddamn bastard (he knows who he is), as well as at least 3 people who have webdiplomacy accounts!

https://imgur.com/a/8seVxUS
I was Russia.

Scoring is Carnage scoring (invented here). Basically, it only matters if you get 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc most centers on the board. A solo is worth more than 3 1st-place finishes and there's only three rounds so you basically get put into a whole new tier if you get a solo, can't get overtaken by someone who hasn't solo'd. So for example, in this game the scores would be
E - 7009
R - 6008
I, F - 4506, 4506
A - 3005
T - 2000 (elim 2nd)
G - 1000 (elim 1st)

I'll make sure to post the results of my other two games (as long as they're flattering to me of course) and encourage anyone at the tournament to also post pictures/EOGs and/or if anyone has any questions about this game, the tournament known as Carnage, or F2F in general I'd be happy to answer them.

I'm sorry I don't have those, and I'm already away from the venue (only one other have of three others was done when I left) but I'll ask the TD to let me tomorrow morning if the live link still isn't working.

I'm Russia again! England decided to suicide into me and is now dead, and Austria decided to stay me for no gain to him and is now dying, but Turkey and Germany got all the profits. Currently on 3 but Germany can take all my dots at any point but can't do anything about it

Alright! Game ended with me getting all my home centers back, and in 4th place on the board, which I'm declaring is a moral victory after being down to 3 centers as Russia.

All the games were done by 2pm but next round doesn't start until 7pm so there's a lot of heavy boardgaming going on! I'm gonna take a nap.

Oh, for sure, but I assume that the philosophy is that since the evening game is allowed to go until the next morning event it makes the most sense to allocate and a biased towards the morning game to make sure that it can be played to completion. On the other hand Carnage scoring is always encouraged early draws

Tournament is over. See above link for final results. I worked with Valis successfully! We're didn't fight (on the board). This is newsworthy.

We were doing really well and not fighting on the board in Round 2 until you decided to stab me for 1 dot and 1 dot only the whole game.... ;)

Well, that's not true. You got 2 and gave me back 1 later. My bad, don't want to misrepresent it.

Three Russia games, 2nd, 4th, and 2.5th. Better than I did last year, not good enough to deserve any kind of mention. 8th overall, so score a point for the power of consistency I suppose.

I made a couple of mistakes, mostly in Round 1 (not forcing Berlin in an attempt to gain goodwill with someone who I know doesn't give a shit about goodwill or past friendship, but for some reason I keep experimenting to see if he ever will) and could have communicated better with OB and done more negotiation and maybe made better offers for him to turn on the board leader/ally (but seriously doubtful that it could/would have happened, and I'm not necessarily blaming him). So even though it was my best performance I think it had the most concrete mistakes in it. But I also can most easily find my tactical/strategic mistakes rather than diplomatic mistakes (because the former is what I'm good at compared to the latter, and also who wants to look at my face more than they have to?)

Round 2 I only got 4th but frankly with OB stabbing me for 2, and Austria who is erratic and didn't want to work with me, and an England suiciding into me, I'm proud of what I did (that Germany *IS* someone who cares about goodwill and friendship and just having a fun game without worrying about points and I had built that up all game with him so he let me keep my 4 dots even when he could have taken 3 of them)

Round 3 Germany lied to me about letting me into Sweden then bounced me out of Sweden, and then, long story short, let England stab him for 4 insisting there's no way this can happen the entire time (where this is the same person I stabbed for 4 to solo in 2018 Boston Massacre), but unfortunately I couldn't be the person to take advantage of him this round which was scary.

SOMEBODY made a huge tactical mistake in Round 3 and in 1903 Austria was actually at 7 centers, Turkey at 3, and I'm at effectively 4 in the south, and there was a very real chance that Austria could *single handidly* take out both of us (because Italy went Hard West and couldn't help or hurt this A vs RT). I had to make a faustian pact where I gave up my grudge against Germany and convinced him to come down to Boh/Tyr and help me out with Austria. It was a slower grind than it needed to be, but it let us bounce back and eventually wipe out Austria, but during that time England was setting up that stab I mentioned above. By the time I recovered I couldn't jockey for board top, and sharing the 2nd with my good friend OB was more than enough for me at that point (since there was no possibility of getting a best Russia based on the board position, hell there was still a chance that England solo'd if he kept pushing (because of my lack of faith for some people on the line to write the correct orders and because it wasn't trivial to cover Livonia properly from my position) so no point in not letting the game end). So I'm not sure what my mistakes were. There was a point where I was back in the game safely that I could have stabbed Turkey fairly well, but it just wasn't something I was willing to seriously consider when Austria was still on the table, not to mention the English solo threat. Nothing I could do in the North, and I don't think France was the kind of person I could have influenced in any particular way, or even necessary what I would have asked him to do besides generically attacking England/Germany, but it's hard to say what much less if anything I said could matter there.

As far as the South goes, yes I got stabbed by Austria for Galicia and then he forced Rumania, but I feel like it was the safe bet he wouldn't attack Turkey *and* me at the same time, *AND* get away with it! (because SOMEBODY MADE AN UNFORCED ERROR *COUGH*). I don't tend to consider things like "even looking back there wasn't a strong reason to cover that move" mistakes; for example imagine that Germany moves to Silesia and Prussia in the Spring of 1901 when you're Russia. Was it a mistake to not bounce Silesia with Warsaw even though you technically could have with hindsight? I'd say not only no, but obviously no. Now, of course, in that extreme case maybe you made a diplomatic mistake, but that's a different issue. And frankly I couldn't cover a possible but not probable Austrian stab while also dealing with an EG, but I ended up using diplomacy rather than tactics with the EG which I'm pretty proud of. England landed a fleet in Norway, moved it to Sweden with my/G blessing in S02, and then there was literally nothing but peace and DMZ in scandinavia/STP for like 7 years, until England made his solo bid, but even then it was congential. I even build A STP rather than F STP in 1907 just as a show of good faith that I knew he could force it if he wanted to go another 2 hours, but I'm going to defend it, but I'm only going to defend not attack, and thus and army and not a fleet, and it was useful, it worked, and while it maybe wasn't the *major* factor (compared to, say, us having a force on Munich if the game kept going because England didn't have enough armies on the mainland), I'm sure it helped.

The real treasure is the friendships we make and strengthen along the way (unless I win, then that's what matters of course)

To be clear, an unforced error is NOT a misorder. It doesn't make it better.
