Tribute to Balki Bartokomous (2015-2018)

#1 Post by VillageIdiot » Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:19 pm

O Balki! my Balki! our fearful game is done,
You’ve plunged beyond the stalemate lines; now 18 centers won.
The steady tock, of the central clock, stops not for even you,
The war for Europe’s over now; you’re chief of the EU;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where neath the falls, my Balki lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Balki! my Balki! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
Your foes are now your allies; from Ankara to Marseilles,
The plus ones never ending in that AAR in the sky.
Here Balki! dear Cascadian!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that neath the falls,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Balki does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My Balki does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
His fleets are docked, his guns uncocked, board folded and away,
Alas, he is disbanded and he cannot hear me say:
“Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
True ally rest in peace,
I’d trust you with my life for sure,
But not to give me Greece.”

RIP my Cascadian brother.

You know, I thought VI had no heart, but this touching tribute is making me reconsider.

Let us all follow PW’s noble lead, and put aside our petty differences in this hour of great sorrow to honour one of our peers.

I salute you for your leadership Mr.Wiggins.

When I saw the headline, I thought Balki had died. Call me naive.

I think we all already assumed you were naive the moment you assumed there would be some "perks" to being a mod...

Thank you for your concern CptMike, it would be my pleasure to share Balki's story.

Balki Bartokomous was born and raised on the Greek-like island of Mypos, where he eked out a living as a shepherd and dreamed of a better life in the United States. Balki's dream was realized when he moved to live with his Cousin Larry in Chicago and start a career at a Ritz Discount store and later the Chicago Chronicle where he would start in the mail room but eventually start a comic strip called 'Dimitri's World' the went on to moderate success. Balki joined the WebDiplomacy world in 2015 where he would also go on to moderate success.

Sadly on July 25th, Balki would face his demise following an accident where he fell from the top of Snoqualmie Falls outside of Seattle Washington.

This is currently under investigation by the Seattle police department for possible foul play. If anybody has witnessed or has any information on this case please contact us immediately.

And onto what is "Cascadia"..

Cascadia is that land and thought at the edge of the worlds. Some have called Cascadia a "state of mind" while others point out that Cascadia is a real place defined by its geology, biodiversity and shared communities. Cascadia does often appear as the eternal Terra Incognito (the land of the unknown) that is shrouded in mystery just outside of the mind and geography, but it is that sense of mystique that makes Cascadia such a unique and real place.

This area has had many names over many years. Called the "Pacific NorthWest" from those who cartographic orientation is from an Atlantic centered map. The Oregon Country by Anglo-Americans crossing the North American continent. Ecotopia by utopians who love the idea of an ecologically centered worldview. Cascadia refers to the bioregion and proposed independent country in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Definitions of the region’s boundaries vary, but usually include the area between the Cascade Range and the Pacific Ocean, and some part of the Coast Mountains. Other definitions follow the boundaries of existing subnational entities, and usually include the territory of British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, while others also include parts of California, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Yukon.

It also has proven to have links to Diplomacy superiority, although the cause of this link is as of yet still unknown.

I'm sure Balki's himself knew less than you about himself.

I don't even think you need the "like" in the last sentence. A quick Google search says that Endor was filmed in northern California. Looking at the Wikipedia article for Cascadia, the inclusion of northern California within Cascadia seems dependent on who you ask. As such, describing Cascadia as Endor seems quite appropriate.

Slightly unrelated note, northern California is beautiful.

Octavious’s new pet is basically a dog except it’s green, no fur, and a hard shell.
