A Diplomacy Game Between 8th Graders

#1 Post by Temasek22 » Tue Jan 21, 2020 1:12 pm

Thought it would be interesting to share this here, hope this is the right forum. :)

So, Hosu, I and a few other friends who are not on this site thought it would be fun to share this almighty game, Diplomacy, to a few high school juniors. In order to prevent a massacre, us Dip players showed them the rules, played an exhibition match and shared some Diplomacy strategy websites. These guys are also strategy game players, they play Risk and some even HOI4 and EU4, so they picked it up fairly quickly.

Alliances formed pretty quickly, E/F are BBFs and Germany almost instantly knew what was going on and tried forming a counter alliance. Someone proceeded to mention Entente vs Central Powers and they proceeded to go ahead almost historically. With the Italian playing both sides, talking quite a lot with Austria to discuss about Ven/Tri. Russia tried being friendly with Austria and Turkey knowing they're in a horrible position if the Central Powers were to band together and the Gal and BLA bounces were prearranged AFAIK.

All goes wrong for the Germans as E/F somehow manage to bounce all of their units and the Austrians have betrayed them and coordinated with Italy and Russia to set up an offensive on the stalemate line in Silesia/Bohemia/Tyrolia. Turkey meanwhile sees a Lepanto and quickly recruits Russia to a counter alliance. Every power picks up a build with Austria and Russia being the exceptions with two each.

Builds are as follows, StP fleet build is in South coast, not north. Mistake in the picture but will be fixed in the upcoming turn. Fairly even with 5 army and 4 fleet builds.

Game has already completed and the rest will be posted later. :3

Sounds rather fun. What ages are 8th graders?

Ah... We called them Year 9 at our school... Or 3rd years... For some bizarre reason we had two naming systems operating in parallel, which I guess is something of a British tradition.

1902 coming up! Sorry for being late, I had a family holiday in Cameron Highlands.

As the Germans continue getting attacked from 5 sides, it is somewhat of a miracle that they have managed to hold on to their 4 SCs for now. Meanwhile, the Russians instantly go back on the Juggernaut promise with Turkey, forcing the very first disband of the game (Bulgaria) already. But as Germany and Turkey appear to be in horrible positions, England's making a move against Russia but is blocked off! I find it interesting that out of the seven powers, 4 (E,G,I,T) have had none of their units move in positions.

Turkey was forced to disband Bulgaria, nothing else.

As corner power Turkey finds himself down to 2 SCs only, Italy opts for an early stab on their ally Austria, nabbing Trieste for themselves. The Russians, despite being board leaders with an empire stretching from Stockholm to Constantinople, are overextending themselves fighting a three-front war as the English are in a good position, the Germans are putting up a tough defense, and their ally Austria may be distracted against the Turks after the Austrian stab. England and France continue progress in the lowlands against Germany.

Germany disbands Holland.

Builds are as follows, with the Turks down to 2 SCs only, will they hold on? And interestingly enough, Brest was the only fleet build, will France stab England? Or is there something else behind the scenes? Only time will tell.
