I trust you have read the classics on these themes? Herodotus, Thucydides?

Darygorgel a good book I just finished was titled "first general staff" about American naval planning. It covers 043-228 but is more interesting for the interest period planning under the treaties.

Thucydides yes, Herodotus no. Most original writings I have read are literary, The Odyssey for example.

Herodotus's last two books are covering the Persian War, though he is not so detailed and to the point as Thucydides, he's a very good source on this events. The first seven books of his history speak about the history of Egypt and Persia and some other stories prior to the war.

HAvent heard of it tbh. Mind linking? The most recent in my own field of interest was Ian Toll's six frigates. Toll's style is more popular, mass-market history but it is up to date and so good. Most of his books are WWII, but this was age-of-sail.

I have read modern books about those time periods that quote Herodotus.

Personally I find the development and suppression of identities fascinating. I'm currently studying the the creation of identities in post-Roman Britain which is pretty niche but full of amazing twists and turns. There's some fairly interesting anti-Roman stuff in there too.

Bunch of periods and events that interest me.

- The Arab Conquests and society under the Caliphates.

- The Byzantine Empire: Fascinated by the whole thing. Especially the early Christian heresies and splits.

- Primitive accumulation, the transition from feudalism to capitalism.

- WWI, particularly the diplomatic aspect of it. This is what got me into Diplomacy.

The great revolutionary waves: 1789, 1848, 1870, 1917, 1968, 1989, etc .

I'm a huge nerd of Roman history. Everything about it. The culture, the emperors, the religions, the church, the battles and wars, the politics.
Game of Thrones got nothing on Roman history.

Has anyone got any recommendations for books on Romanitas?

Ah well my need for Romanitas related books has passed. Interestingly there's not much written on the topic which is going to make my dissertation a real bitch but such as life. I'd like to encourage a bit more discussion in this thread so let's see where the historians of webDip fall on the Great Man theory of history, Yea or Nay?
