How would you improve the website?

#1 Post by Vom Kriege » Thu Dec 27, 2018 8:18 pm

I'm a relatively new person to Diplomacy and the website. I'd like to thank all of those involved in the development and maintenance of this site - it's very well done! That said, I'd love to hear other people's ideas on how the website could be improved.

Phase Lengths!

One that comes to my mind: permitting different Phase Lengths - one phase time for the spring and fall moves/diplomacy period, and one phase time for retreats and builds. I like having live games with rulebook messaging… but the time requirements for having meaningful diplomacy/messaging are not the same as the time requirement for retreats and builds.

If there are specific improvements, or more accurately issues you think need to be addressed and you do not see them in this list https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/issues you are welcome and encouraged to make a github account and submit them.

I also do question if being a member for 2 years makes you "new to the website" though lol.

What about a simple one like a hyperlink to make Pause Requests &/or Player Reports on games? Simple usability tweak

People have complained for years about the save/ready buttons being too close. It's bullshit that the developers haven't listened to this basic improvement suggestion.

I moved them further apart years ago, move onto your next bad joke attempt.

There isn't that much to complain about. The Moderators are doing a good job with the site.

That said, how difficult would it be to make the webdiplomacy website into a cross compatible game (accessible via website as usual and downloadable game for your cellphone)? If Diplomacy could also be played on your cellphone versus just opening it via website page, maybe that would increase the amount of users on the website going forward?

Yes that is a good thing, i think that a Webdiplomacy app a very good idea is!
That being said, the moderators are doing a excellent job!

I'm sure a dev can comment better than I, but I believe there's currently work being done on an API to allow for the creation of mobile applications. There was someone working on an app for a while, but I'm not sure if that has gone anywhere since.

That said, building in an app is not particularly easy, and we've traditionally needed dev resources elsewhere. But if it does happen, it definitely would be useful, given we live in the mobile age.

I use webdip on my phone all the time and don't find it the least bit restrictive. How would making it an app improve the webdip experience from an iPhone?

The main problem on my phone is that the "save" and "ready" buttons are a bit too far apart. They should be moved closer.

Regarding developing the website into an app, I do wonder if it would provide for additional options such as sending notifications when messages come in and when turns end (regarding the latter, in live games I find myself constantly refreshing to ensure that the turn hasn't ended early because everyone has submitted orders and pressed "ready").

A RSS feed would be nice. vDip has it.

Automatic refresh on live games (ie 5 min phase length), in-game messaging during the join phase, replace dropdown menus with GUI interface for order input, larger map, landscape friendly layout.

Interactive map - Order Interface button is very useful in vdip.

We need a feature to be able to ragequit and abandon games without hurting our reliability rating. That would be a positive feature :P

On a more serious note, I'm not sure we need that "open a larger map in a new tab" button between the history buttons... perhaps remove that and make the phase-history-arrow buttons a bit bigger?

I loooooooove VDip's interactive map. Sometimes the drop down is preferable, but when one is blessed with a large number of units to do orders for, it can be a huge pain to use webdips interface.

I think the Mods need to switch around the "Save" and "Ready" buttons. I just get mixed up sometimes which then ruins games. Oh, and moving them a bit closer would be nice too. Thanks.

Here is one that I'd find interesting - statistics!

It's likely not that tough to add in statistics for various countries regarding solos, draws and losses for each map. Much more complex but much more juicy... robust/detailed statistics with filters so that I player can analyze, for example, opening moves versus eventual results (e.g. 'Russia moves to Black Sea x% of the time', or even as sophisticated as 'when Russia employs opening X, England finishes in 5th place or worse Y% of the time').
