Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
Trump's behavior and decisions are mostly random, but historically most countries (including those you have listed) have pursued both protectionist and free trade policies according to what suits them, or what was believed to suit them, at the time. Free trade, in all likelihood, is not always the o...

Re: Utter Betrayal
They were states at one point, but there wasn't much left of them by the time the conquistadors arrived.
Nevertheless I don't understand what difference it makes on the distinction between immigration and colonization.

"Yeah, a lot of highly important differentiating details really conveniently slip out when anti-immigration folks start using European settlement as an argument against immigration." I agree that the case of the European settlement of the Americas is so different as to be irrelevant to the current i...

Re: Utter Betrayal
The arrival of Europeans in the new world resulted in the wholesale replacement of the previously existing American societies.
It's probably the worst example to use when trying to convince people of the benefits of immigration to the incumbent society.

Re: The Do-Nothing Discipline
As much as I think both of those Nates are overrated, I don't think "guilt by word association" (fundamentals -> fundamentalists) makes a very strong case.

Re: Jamie dead posting
I assume there's no rule against dead posting in the actual Diplomacy games, considering the UI allows you to do it, and I don't clearly see it in the rules. Is this correct?

This forum might not be as "modern" as Disqus, but I'm assuming it was chosen because it was free, and apart from accidentally boldfacing my entire first post, not too hard to figure out.

Re: Yet another needless mass shooting
"I assume that intentionally providing someone with a gun that is used in a crime would get someone sentenced with aiding and abetting." What about negligently providing someone with a gun though? Banks have "know your customer" laws to prevent money laundering... should gun dealers also have to do ...

Re: Yet another needless mass shooting
I don't think the 2nd Amendment is incompatible with strict penalties for negligence or illegal use. Is there any legal reason why the registered owner of a gun that is used in a robbery (and not reported missing) can't be sentenced to, say, 10 years in prison? Or for this teacher who discharged a g...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
The US can't defend Seoul. The North Koreans could destroy it whenever they want. I will make a simple observation that, if your basic nuke cannot be taken out mid flight, the Russians wouldn't have spent countless billions developing increasingly more advanced missiles designed to get through defe...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
Spending countless billions on welding it to a rocket that the Yanks can shoot down in a heartbeat is an unnecessary expense. It does make sense for North Korea to pursue nuclear missile technology because 1) it is not actually possible to reliably shoot down an ICBM with current technology, and 2)...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
Trump: “Trade wars are good and easy to win.” Is he telling the truth or lying? Can anyone believe a word he says? It's a baseless assertion, meant to "trigger" his political adversaries, who will in turn write countless articles to refute it, keeping Trump in the press. It's how he operated during...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
There are plenty of recorded episodes where Trump is having visual hallucinations where he claims to see things that aren't there. From blood pouring down a woman's face that event photographs show didn't happen to Muslims in New Jersey cheering 9/11. We can probably pass off all the claims of neve...

Although the WTO rules aren't exactly laws, it is disturbing to me than a motivated and interested citizen can't easily find out what the rules actually are.I was unable to find anything on the bound rates.

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
" ut the American ALSO pays taxes on what ever is left over." Is there anything left over after the French collect their taxes? I would assume that the US has a lower income tax rate, so after the foreign taxes paid to France are deducted, there isn't anything owed to the US. Someone has to know thi...

Re: USA starts a trade war with allies
Trump for some unfathomable reason deployed this at least a year too early, but it could be an effective re-election strategy, if he makes it that far. It steals some thunder from left-leaning Democrats who might conceivably propose the same sort of thing, and although most genuine Republicans are a...
