Re: US authoritarianism

Oh, for God's sake. You have well and truly signed yourself up to the tinfoil hat brigade. Biden will be President, there will be no civil war. There will be shooting because it's America and there's always shooting, but the worst case is the lunatic who was always going to go on a murder spree alte...

Re: US authoritarianism

Ok, let's take scenario 1 first. Trump is found to be the rightful winner by the legal system. In that case he is the rightful winner and should be President and any violent protesters (or, as they are more correctly named, criminals) should be dealt with by the law. Scenario 2, aside from being inf...

Re: US authoritarianism

I have interest in the outcome, not the process. Frankly business as usual seems by far the most likely result. The last half decade has been an endless stream of excitable predictions about Trump that have largely not been realised. I see no reason to suspect anything else this time.

Re: US authoritarianism

@ ora Is it a good counter argument? It just seems like someone trying to redefine a coup to make the US election look more like one. What powers that don't belong to him has Trump taken, exactly? The lawsuits in themselves are not really the issue. It is the outlandish claims which are being fed to...

Re: US authoritarianism

He's already lost 30+ lawsuits after the election. Then the system is working to your satisfaction? I think the big fear lies in the millions of people who now even consider Fox News to have a liberal bias. I can't see any way back to a civil discussion. It's all about conspiracy theories from here...

Re: US authoritarianism

Trump being Trump doesn't surprise me, the Republicans backing him up are a threat to democracy in the US. The republicans who have gerrymandered the state electoral blu diaries for years because ultimately they don't care about democracy. They care about their own agenda first. I tend to agree, al...

Re: US authoritarianism

I couldn't care less what Trump's team are actually claiming. My understanding is that there are a vast array of differing lawsuits, the details of which interest me not at all. They are going to court, and the courts will decide whether to dismiss them as nonsense or treat them as worthy of conside...

Re: Is our world safer, happier, or more productive....

The difficulty with the competition aspect is that it's not obvious how competition would work. Ultimately Facebook is a community noticeboard for the modern age, and no community has ever had competing notice boards. They only work effectively if everyone has access to the one. What would you prefe...

Re: US authoritarianism

The election was unusual in several respects, notably an unprecedented number of postal votes and a far higher than expected number of votes cast. Finding legitimate grounds for suspicion does not seem challenging, and I can't say I'm at all concerned by these suspicions being explored by the courts...

Re: US authoritarianism

The result is flawed for many reasons. It's just not particularly misrepresentative of the will of the people, or illegitimate. But regardless of how you or I feel about the result, surely you must agree that people should have the right to a legal challenge if they so wish?

Re: US authoritarianism

You believe that using the established legal system to challenge a result you suspect to be flawed undermines democracy?

More that they are on it, use it, and continue to use it because it's so fundamentally useful... like a car. And, also like a car, when you have a twat using the thing it can cause a lot of damage. But that doesn't mean we'd all be better off without them or riding donkeys / using Friends Reunited i...

Re: Armenia, nil points

- The agreement is an admission on Russia's part of its diminishing power, as they don't intervene more on Armenia's behalf. A curious assessment. In what sense do you believe that Russia's interests have been harmed? All I have seen is the Kremlin punishing an Armenian government for its recent di...

She appears to have had various views on abortion throughout her life, which doesn't seem particularly unusual. She has both been against it and advised on methods that can perform it. It does seem that the organisation she helped creat was geared towards family planning rather than abortion while s...
