SimplSimon, you have a good mindset for this game.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Not something I am much interested in! From Standard to 1900 on down, the period and subject matter has practically been done to death. I generally go for periods and subject matter which is not so well covered.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

@David, yes i realize you were talking about variants. I'm just saying that if Calhamer had asked for your advice then Classic dip would have had 31 sc's, while i'm glad it has 34 :-) Or maybe 37 SCs. Also Switzerland would have been passable, Venice wouldn't have bordered Trieste and there would h...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Gimix, that comment was made specifically in reference to variant design. In Standard Dip a "natural" 2 way draw, as opposed to an 2 way draw agreed upon by allies, is a pretty rare occurrence. The various recent comments illustrate the unfortunate distortions to the game encouraged by scoring syste...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Prince William, that is absolutely not true in my case. Though I do prefer to play against the most skilled opponents available, it is a pleasure to play against anyone who tries their damnedest to win. And as I have previously mentioned, the best Diplomacy players lose regularly to average or even ...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

There are scoring systems out there which reward size finishing order and/or number of dots in draws. I just like to make draw whittlers' lives as difficult as possible. :smirk:

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

One caveat. This assumes in each case all neutrals have been captured.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Yes, as to no two way draws.

With a prime number of dots, there is no possibility of the participants in a draw all finishing with the same number of dots.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

This sort of thing is why the variants I design pretty much all have an odd number of dots and most have a prime number of dots.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

That is if he's recognised as the strongest and the others see to his elimination. But one mediocre or weak player may dream of the solo but the realistic approach is that he cannot get it so he has for the moment to settle with less. In order to avoid losing he has to play in alliance and that's w...

Ιf a player is not a strong one he cannot aspire to a solo he has to go with a draw.
This is utterly, completely wrong. The game is Diplomacy, not chess. The strongest Dip players in the world can and do lose to average, or even below average players.

Re: The guy I'm about to kill is reciting Poetry to me. What would you do next?

My analysis would be simple: Which course of action results in a better chance at a solo? :-D

Either way, no reason you can't join in the poetical fun. I sometimes do so myself, though normally it would be in public press or an EOG statement, rather than in private communications.

Re: Theory/strategy books?

You may also want to read some of the military classics. I have previously recommended the following elsewhere on this site: A Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musashi, Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War, by Munenori Yagyu, On War, by Clausewitz, Strategy, by Liddell-Hart, The Prince, by Mac...

Re: Rules Resolution Question

Not necessarily. You don't know what the rest of the rules say, especially if they state specifically that a convoy would be an exception to the quoted rule.

Re: Convoy conundrum...

On that I can agree. There are numerous convoy paradoxes, set forth in jaw dropping/mind numbing detail in the DATC, which are not handled at all by the rulebook. Fortunately; they come up very, very rarely in actual play.

Ugh. Got another headache thinking about paradoxes.

Re: Convoy conundrum...

The actual rule from the rulebook is as follows: " A convoyed Army does not cut the support of a unit supporting an attack against one of the Fleets necessary of the Army to convoy. This is a tricky and rare situation, but without this rule (Using Diagram 30 as an example), a paradox may occur." Not...
