Actually you can even survive without units on the board. If they dislodge you and it's the retreats turn, you don't have a unit that can be seen. PRINCE WILLIAM is right but I didn't consider the fact damo666 pointed out. Life expectancy was surely around 30 years but he's probably right than those who reach adulthood can expect to live longer than that.
