Re: New Variant: Comments Wanted for Unconstitutional

Disclaimer: I've not played variants, and really don't know how to speculate about how this would go beyond the first year or so. Having said that, here are some random observations: I like the distant SCs in Haiti. With the neutral units in them, taking them is a risky proposition, but if you manag...

Re: New Variant: Comments Wanted for Unconstitutional

I do not want to be yellow. They have three neighbours, including the corner power of purple who has no other serious neighbour. All their nearby neutral SCs have another power adjacent to them. As far as I see, they have no easy year 1 SC - their neighbours can deny all the neutrals to them without...

This one I can get behind, because you'd get to stop playing Monopoly pretty quickly.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

The central thing that makes alliances in Diplomacy interesting is cooperating with someone to benefit you both, despite knowing that you do not share the same end goals. If you and your ally both agree to a 2-way draw (and both know the other is serious), it takes away this key element of the game....

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

Players expect you to play to win but they expect and hope that you also have a code of honour. Some do. Many don't. Personally I play to win, and I expect and hope everyone I play with does the same. I think that makes for a very fun game, because it leads to a more dynamic alliances, and to have ...

I would have joined if it didn't have an excused missed turn. Combined with chaos, that feels like a recipe for a never-ending game.

Are we doing anything special to facilitate learning? (ie. EoGs, etc?)
I assumed that this was just a nice topic title... but I'm very happy to take some note to write a decent EoG, and would be glad if others did the same.

Re: Help me get better at gunboat

I am sad to have missed these signups, for I also aspire to be better at gunboat. Here's a second signup list for the same settings: 2 ranked gunboat games, 1.5 day phases, 5 point bet, readying up encouraged. As with the first set, reliable people only, and preference to people who regularly use th...

Re: Scoring systems - proportional to supply centres

I think that is some of the answer to why there are so many odd/bad scoring systems. There are at least three things people might be trying to achieve with a scoring system: 1) A fair outcome given the final result of a stalemated game (many proponents of DSS focus on this). 2) A good set of incenti...

Re: Scoring systems - proportional to supply centres

Thank you, that was indeed a very interesting read. Particularly this bit, which explains what is (for me) the most counterintuitive incentive; bringing down the leader. "The balance of power incentive is more esoteric but is perhaps the most interesting of all; I value it for its effect on gameplay...

Re: Non-aggression pact

A strange question! Terms like "non-aggression pact" or "alliance" don't have any kind of consistent precise meaning. Perhaps it would be better to ask: what will B think and do if you support hold the army?

Scoring systems - proportional to supply centres

I was thinking about a really simple scoring system: 1 for a solo. In a draw, (SCs you own)/(total SCs owned) This is like sum of squares without the squaring. At a glance, this seems to have good properties, particularly compared to SoS. It is simple to calculate. Points totals don't become meaning...
