Re: 2019 ODC Finals (retrospective)

teccles it is impressive that you started playing diplomacy so recently, yet managed to play at such a high level so quickly. How did you do that? Good question. I'll try to answer it by breaking down the skills of Diplomacy into political, tactical and strategic (as in Brother Bored's treatment ),...

Re: 2019 ODC Finals (retrospective)

Here is my route to the finals! Some wheeling, some dealing, a lot of luck, and many lessons learned. ---- R1 G34 I started playing Diplomacy in March 2019, shortly after the ODC tournament started. I was quickly hooked, and subbed into R1 G34 of the ODC. At the time, I had no thought of qualifying;...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

This did happen to yours truly in the first round of the tournament. I'm pleased to have a chance to redeem myself, but it will be doubly painful if I become a recurring "what not to do" character in the Swordsman extended universe. For my part, I'm still expecting I'll make an appearance in Top 5 ...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Publishing press is an interesting suggestion. For my part, I'm also not up for promising *full* disclosure, simply because you get to know people in a game of Diplomacy, and I might say things about my real life that I wouldn't put on the public internet. However, I think I'd be up for an edited ve...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Thanks! While we're being stats nerds, I thought I'd revisit my attempt to model the qualification threshold in the semi-finals. Here's my crack at this; it has simulations and stuff! TL;DR - 47.2 I assumed that: The players are assigned randomly to games. Each game has a random result, drawn from t...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

(Sorry, share with Brumark an ability to copy numbers to forum posts properly... we can actually expect 1.6 eliminations)

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

I'd be interested in the SoS score for each country, if you have records that can produce it easily. The finalists have an overall record on webdiplomacy of 59.9% draws, 17.6% solos, and 22.5% eliminations (in full press games). So I'm afraid we can expect only 1.4 players to be eliminated from this...

Not that it matters in any way whatsoever, but Teccles what site do you call home?
Er... WebDiplomacy. Though I did play one face-to-face game when I was 10. The *only* thing I remember about it is being called "a lamb to the slaughter", which may also be an apt description in this final.

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

To clarify the scoring system for the final - is it one board, sum of squares (aka board leader wins)?

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

I'm going to take this as confirmation enough of the placements. Congrats to all the other finalists and very excited for this last game! I love that most of you I've never had a chance to play with and from what I've seen so far this is looking like an incredibly impressive and interesting line up...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

As somewhat OCD about these sorts of things and an accountant by profession you numbers both being "essentially" but not actual the same as mine fill with a cold sense of dread. A mystery I must unravel. If not too onerous if you could let me know where the differences are via PM so I can investiga...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

Jay: Thanks for the explanation on the rationale for top scores, that makes perfect sense. I wonder whether, in practise, you don't need to worry so much about people draw-whittling. For example, your 7 centre top score is based on a rather absurd scenario, where a board leader on 7 centres has the ...

Re: Two Tier Scoring

Jay: apologies if I’ve missed this, but could you spell out a little more why your top scores are what they are? I do think one reason your system feels complicated is that these values don’t have an obvious explanation.

Re: Two Tier Scoring

I don't have time to reply to everything here (I will eventually), but I'm honestly confused why people think my system is complicated to compute. Maybe it is just my mathematician brain? I wrote up the scoring math so that one formula would cover ties as well as sole board leadership. But when the...

Re: Petition: Save the eternal stalemate!

You could do it if build phases were slightly less common: Spring: A takes B’s last two SCs Autumn: B dislodges one of A’s units, which disbands. Autumn 2: B dislodges the other of A’s units, which disbands. Winter: B has no SCs, so disbands their two units. A has no home SCs, and no units. But I ca...
