Re: Do people want Chaos?

It looks like the first couple turns of Chaos would depend a lot on luck, with luck of the draw (which country you drew; what your neighbors' map bias is; etc.) being a huge factor in whether you have a chance to survive and continue. But I've never played this variant. What do those with experienc...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

I agree with you on drawing. I think playing for the draw from the start is boring. Yet, as a quote on my profile has said for a long time, "It is silly to insist that there is any single "best" goal in Diplomacy. Everyone has his own priorities and trying to fit them all into one's own mold is sma...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Capt, you are right to point out that a lot of Swordsman's argument rests on assuming DSS is the default. Removing that assumption allows for a more unbiased examination of the merits of each system. Yet, DSS is the default, both on webDip and in the rulebook. Players can end the game by agreement ...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

So, I actually wrote an article this morning (well, it kinda morphed into a video script because that's what I'm used to writing) but it ended up being 3000ish words and I felt like nobody would be bothered reading a 3000 word response post, so I wrote the post you saw instead. It's certainly not su...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

If anyone is willing to write a contrary article about why experienced players sometimes prefer sum-of-squares scoring, I would gladly publish it on my blog as a guest post. It doesn't have to be long. I'd prefer something that is a stand-alone article on the benefits of SoS and limitations of DSS ...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

I agree that this is not advice. I also want to add that spending 10 in-game years to eliminate a player in DSS is a total snooze-fest and not the kind of diplomacy people should want to play. 100% agree with everything from meme If you don't want to spend 10 in-game years eliminating a player just...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

I have no clue why Jmo added it to the Diplomacy Advice Master Post. Maybe because he didn't read it. Swordman's done good work in the past, but a) this is not advice and b) it's full to the brim with misinformation and is aimed at new players. If anything SoS related should be added to the master p...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

The entire article is terrible and (I'm sorry Swordsman) it's clear that the author has not thought about the implications of SoS scoring at all. It's well written but that's about all I can say for it. I agree very strongly with this article and can attest the anology and facts presented about Magi...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

An interesting read. It's particularly interesting that people think that way. I believe the statement "Let me point out that most webDiplomacy players do not really care about the points" is correct and negates almost everything else in the article. Personally, I often don't even remember which sc...

A better solution to this is already in the GM Guide.

There are a lot of players in Melbourne, I'm not sure about Sydney. There's a reasonably active Google group for FtF - https://groups.google.com/forum/m/?hl=e ... /daanz-dip

WDC Top Board Commentary w/ Ezio

I unfortunately couldn't make WDC this year (hopefully I'll get there next year since it'll be much closer to me :D ) so instead I've been completely avoiding all info about it so I could do blind commentary on the top board afterwards. Today I went through the Backstabbr sandbox phase by phase with...

will there be video footage?
I think that depends on whether Chris is playing in the final or not. Would be awesome to see though :)

Re: Do people want Chaos?

+1 from me. It's a variant that initially looks like it's just some wacky joke someone made, but if you actually play it the diplomacy involved is incredible.

I can confirm Chaos can safely be ported. The only alt rule for it is Build Anywhere, which is already used here in Modern :)

Re: WedDip variant idea

You might enjoy Pirates! over on vDiplomacy. It doesn't have a wide variety of random events but it does have one fairly impactful one - a hurricane will spawn in a random location after each build phase and travel in a random path over the course of the year, destroying units and neutralising SCs.

Re: Known World 901 ???

I believe it's the Neutral units that break it, although transform might be a problem if the units didn't break it first. This site does not like having units not belong to a player.

Re: Spring 2018 Champions League

... Are there any metrics available to mods or developers that show how many people currently have these games on spectate? I wondered the same thing myself! Which means the mods probably do not have access to this info. It is possible but it has to be pulled from the database. ATC did it once to h...

Re: Game processed too soon?

Oh, Baldur's Gate (at least the second one) is also multiplayer iirc. In my opinion the best old DnD game was Neverwinter Nights 2 though
