Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

Wow. Well done to all involved. @peterwiggin For a given power how is the sequence of orders determined given previous orders taken into account? Is it random, most adjacent neighbours, present or something else? Just curious. Thanks It's a preset ordering that tries to put units that are close on ...

Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

The bots we have on webDip use a model developed by a group at MILA and described in this paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.02128 . Here, I'm going to give a summary of how the model works. For details, go read the paper! In traditional computing, the programmer writes down what the program should d...

Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

I've read the paper, and a lot went over my head, but this is incredible and massive thanks for doing it! I had one question about it - the paper says "orders from the last movementphase are enough to infer the current relationship between the powers". I know it's not easy to tell exactly what it w...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Hi all,

It's been brought to our attention that R2 games 1-4 have 48 hour deadlines while R2 games 5-8 have 36 hour deadlines. Because games 1-4 have been underway, we are changing games 5-8 to 48 hour deadlines for consistency.

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Hello Everyone, The moderator team has taken over running the tournament with the help of captainmeme due to the TD and selected co-td not having the time or necessary access to keep up with the games. From here on out, please direct all requests and needs to webdipmod@gmail.com. We have also turned...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

First of all, if we're policing language here, random and uniform are not the same thing.

Second of all, I wish more of you unlucky people would join my games.

Just a friendly reminder that students and TAs should not post in this thread. TAs are welcome to ask the professors questions via PM.

Re: School of War Summer 2019

So the one point I want to double down on and disagree with captain on is that England's moves were worth the risk or may work out in a different game. I absolutely disagree with this assessment and think that England telling Germany they are moving from the channel to MAO and convoying to Belgium ...

Can't wait for your commentary on the game pw!!
It's actually much less stressful when I don't have to run the thing (remind professors to post) or post commentary myself.

Re: School of War Summer 2019

Question for Balki: If I'm Germany, I can understand not wanting RT to roll over Austria, but how well do I actually want Austria to do? Won't a successful Austria be looking to take Munich and Berlin in order to set up a solo shot? Question for jmo: Now that the other players can't see when I've sa...

* Stares defiantly.
* Resolves to provide ever-so-suboptimal advice to Durga’s mentee.
* Smiles with satisfaction
* Resumes distributing autographed headshots.
I didn't get an autographed headshot :cry:

I can indeed confirm that I played a game against actual people, in real time, in real life. Thanks to Randy and everybody else involved in organizing Massacre for letting me show up for one round. Thanks Aurelin for stealing my +1s. Some general observations: ftf is so stressful. I should have done...

Re: What are you reading?

In any case, last week I finished All the Things You Never Told Me, and now I'm on The Calculating Stars, which just somehow beat The Poppy War for a Nebula. How is The Calculating Stars? I like some of MRK's other stuff. I'm still mad that it beat The Poppy War, but it's actually really good. I ne...
