Re: 1v1 practice

I used to be decent at 1v1, but I haven't played in months. I probably still have some grasp of strategy, but also will surely mess things up from rust. If you want, some practice games might help us both?

I probably can't commit to more than 2 games at a time, (and would prefer 1) however.

Re: Changed RR, Missed Turns, and Game Create

Thing is, there's just not that many turns in one's rating yet since it came out a month ago. Wait for the full year to pass, and a couple missed turns aren't going to be as weighted. There's also an extra temporary penalty that goes away after a month. Wait a little without missing turns and your R...

Re: Lusthog!

Ooh Lusthog! I want to play, but can't play a bunch at once. Can I just join for one? Also, the rule is that you cannot draw unless the game is physically stalemated, right? ( it's been awhile since I've played Lusthog, but that's what I remember?) Player List: 1. Chaqa (3-5 games) 2. MoscowFleet (2...

PlayDiplomacy has this, it's the default if you set the player count to 2 (although I think they changed it so that Italy never joins a side, because otherwise most games were won by a coin toss).
So what you're saying is that vDip should get on adding this?

Re: Game event notifications

Even if email notifications are impossible, what about browser or push notifications? I imagine it would still require similar large server resources, but maybe it's more feasible than an expansive email server?

Which ones, just the variants? Some of them didn't seem to make a ton of sense being multi field options.
Variants especially, I think could benefit. Yet, is there any reason not to make all fields with more than 2 (+ all) options to allow multiple concurrent choices?

Re: Development Updates - Game Search

Hmm I can see how I was unclear.

Is it possible to make the other fields take multiple options, from a future development standpoint.

Re: Development Updates - Game Search

Squigs, this is amazing! That non-functional search needed replacing. You deserve all the +1s you can get. I have a question, though. 'Messaging Type' has multi-option checkboxes, but the rest are single-option dropdowns. Is there a reason for the difference? Can the rest of the fields also be filte...

This site would not be anywhere near as good if jmo hadn't been here these past ten years.

Fitting that he should get two million points as a reward.

Re: Changed RR, Missed Turns, and Game Create

Great work on this, but I think the only downfall is players who know they will be eliminated at various stages of the game can just not enter orders and delay the game for everyone else. Any thoughts or discussions on how to prevent this from happening? Maybe remove the excused miss for anyone wit...

I almost exclusively get into games through the forum. The players are often better and more reliable.

Re: Weak Press

How on earth do you go about forming a workable strategy before you have built an understanding of who your opponents are? In gunboats you have no choice but to build your strategy on a foundation of assumptions. In diplomacy playing with that kind of handicap is entirely optional. It would be supe...

Re: Weak Press

I think it comes down to there being easy tools to practise and improve tactics—GB, 1v1, etc—but that the equivilants for communications are incredibly time-consuming, long-term efforts.

Re: HTTP Strict Transport Security

webDip has a few redirecting issues. It's currently possible to access the site through five different urls and three different logins. I think the plan is to eventually route them all to either https://webdiplomacy.net or https://www.webdiplomacy.net.

Re: Rhetoric - threatening without threatening

I'm going to be annoying and subvert the question. Maybe we shouldn't be asking "How does one make productive threats?" but rather "Are threats productive at all?" My opinion is that it is rare threats get a positive response. In some cases, a positive response is not needed, and threats can be usef...

Re: New Menu

Hello! With the new menu, when I click on a game, it has no 'Board' option. I know this is a small convenience, that really doesn't need to be there. But it was nice to easily click to update the page. Are page reloads safe nowadays? I've always been in the habit of clicking links to reload pages, ...
