Re: Inconsistencies with coastal orders

I don't really understand the distinction given in the OP. Either the standard is 1) If a unit can move to ANY part of the province, it can offer support to hold or attack ANY part of the province i.e. F SMY cannot support another unit into Ankara, because F SMY cannot move to ANK F FIN CAN support ...

Re: Strategy Tidbits: Russia

Some thoughts: 1) Sev-Rum is a poor move generally in spring 1901, and in fall 1901 essentially broadcasts your intention to attack Turkey, not Austria! Since F Sev-Rum + Build F Sev = Turkey in early trouble, whereas your'e basically giving Austria a pretty big pass (as I've heard before, a Russian...

Re: The Italian Draw

If I had to play a game with my life on the line... I wouldn't choose Italy. That said, if you aren't willing to attack France or Austria... I don't know what I could say to help. Seems like you are limiting your options down to... almost nothing? If you're not going against France or Austria early...

Re: The Italian Draw

As Italy, the LAST thing you want to do is to be cautiously neutral. Pick a side, run with it, expand. Italy's greatest strength is its central location and ability to project force rapidly in almost any direction if it grows quickly (it can build fleets to send west against france or east against t...

Re: Gunboat Strategy: Italy

I tend to think that if Russia and Turkey are fighting, it's good in the sense that it'll help you not get swarmed by one or the other, but it's bad in that Austria can focus almost entirely on taking you down (also, he might be able to ally with Russia against Turkey or vice-versa with well placed ...

Also, mbSmith, I assume you meant Ionian not TYS in all options, but if not, please explain?
Yeah I did just sloppy in labeling lol

I tend not to really fear France massively in gunboat, but then again I'm like the world's worst France player so *shrugs*

Re: Gunboat Strategy: Italy

FWIW I've generally done decently as Italy in press and gunboat, so I'll just give my $0.02 on gunboat... 1) Pick who you're going to attack right off the bat, with three primary opening possibilities - Lepanto (Ven H, Rom-Apu, Nap-TYS): you're going after Turkey here. Kinda sucks for you if Austria...

In response to this conversation, I direct readers to the following document I made. I have pictures and explanations of the winning positions. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CAMsmurxvkGMF77wOCKTmAwZsIDeLFwvVtStABatOtA I think I disagree with you about putting STP in the "never" category for s...

Re: first two players

Look over previous iterations of the format and see what has or has not worked for various powers. You can also check out

for some advice, mainly focusing on openings.

Re: 2018 Gunboat Tournament

BONUS RULE: if a player enters Trieste from Venice in '01, he will be banned from the tournament and from the site. Thanks, ghug. I'm guessing this is a joke but idk? As italy, key lepanto opening seems workable enough (punishing an Austria who gets aggressive with his fleet but still making it cle...

Re: Monarchism is less dysfunctional than Democracy

The dictator or monarch will not save you and will not make your problems go away. Instead he will replace your problems with worse ones.

Re: Monarchism is less dysfunctional than Democracy

Are you arguing that monarchy is preferable to democracy? It seems like you've come short of that conclusion but I may be misinterpreting. But as far as monarchy being less dysfunctional or more efficient that is certainly true - there is just fewer moving parts in a monarchy. When the monarch is g...

Re: (bi)annual WebDip Gunboat tournament?

Any updates on timing? I’d also prefer the “7 games, 7 powers” concept; if it’s helpful, I can share how I organized something similar on playdip a couple years ago (idea being to maximize the cross-pollinization of people with each other, and then make a few Manila tweaks so it’s not blatantly obvi...

It's on the link, right now you're rank 21 out of 296. I'm actually hopeful that I'll get something of a boost in the next 1v1 rankings; I basically batted .500 this month, but did it almost entirely against people ranked higher than me. We shall see...
