Re: Introducing the first ever webDiplomacy Terminator Tournament!

Feels like a good % of people are dying FAST as Austria, probably because Italy is attacking them in 1901 well more often than site meta suggests. Italy felt *TOO* easy to solo, mainly b/c I don't think the bots really recognized the importance of key stalemate line positions or when I was in strong...

Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

Once again I DO insist : Thank you very much for introducing bot's on Webdip! There will be a next step in future to improve the IA's skills ( I have read and understood that we can NOT improve this at short term ) but in 1v1 the bot really made numerous errors: Trial : CptMike vs IA bot yeah kinda...

First set of invites will go out tonight. There are... uh... a lot... of entrants so far, so if you filled out the form already but aren't included in the invites I send out tonight, don't take it personally.

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

I think the trivial answer to "when should you use a RNG to make a decision" is something like "when there are 2+ options of approximately equal attractiveness and when I have no real way to sort between then", bonus points for actively wanting to avoid being predictable. As a 1v1 player who's at le...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

@swordsman: I think I'd probably try and clarify my headspace a bit more... In PRESS diplomacy, you have plenty of control and influence over what the other players on the board are doing, and as a consequence, if you find yourself ganged up on early (England getting Sealioned with Russia in STP; Fr...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

I do agree with the notion of treating the game as if it's non-luck as part of a self-improvement regimen That said... This commentator, however, unironically uses the abbreviation RNG and the metaphor “coin flip” to describe how the players choose their moves and strategies. *ahem* I believe that I...

Re: Smallest Turtling Position

Well the presumption is no hostile southern navies, something like turkey or Austria defending against an England-Germany alliance.

Re: Smallest Turtling Position

I think on the east side it’s actually unit con/arm holding con/smy/ank? The units proposed can’t hold Bulgaria, and if an enemy army gets into arm, then I don’t think any of the Turkish centers can be held. I guess you could say a smy comstantly bouncing arm, but just u arm is simpler (also f smy i...

Re: Smallest Turtling Position

England (or France or Germany or Russia) can hold against a southern power or alliance with just three units. MAO, Portugal, one of ENG/IRI/NAO. 100% impossible to crack that without a ship already north of MAO or capability to build one. You can tack on Scandinavia for just three units more (den, S...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

I think England in the channel with wales army is super nasty for France, but England in the channel with Yorkshire army isn’t THAT bad, since it can convoy to Norway or Belgium, and even if it goes to Belgium it can go after Germany instead of France reasonably well. But to the extent meta shifts t...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

If England NEVER opens to the channel, as France I'm probably thinking of going there once in a while but definitely not my main preference. If England ALWAYS opens to the channel, as France it still isn't necessarily huge to go there defensively; provided England opens Yor-Lvp instead of Yor-Wal, h...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

As England, if Russia opens up north, you're probably in enough trouble that even that build won't save you... but usually he won't open north. As England, if France opens to the channel (and France has a decent incentive to do so, I feel like I'd probably do it 25-33% of the time as France for how ...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

Specifically, based on fall 1901 moves it can be a very good or very bad option to block.

Vacated ENG = let Russia in most of time
Russia blatantly allying w turkey and Austria already looks doomed? Bounce
Etc.

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

There's always a risk. But "Russia gets strong" is less of a risk than "France gets strong". A strong Russia will still need to deal with at least one and uually multiple of Germany, Austria (typically strong Russia = dead Austria but not always), Italy, Turkey, and a Russian collapse is often possi...
