Re: Online Diplomacy Championship 2019 Journal

As much as I would have loved to do that, the demands of keeping yet another journal are just too intense. The world will be lucky if I do this once every 2 years... Also, Round 2 was much more complex (as one would expect), and also my life got waaaaaaaaay busier since the tournament started. I fee...

Being annoying gets you stabbed

Hello friends. I've started a new series of articles. This series will be an exploration of my thoughts on why players get backstabbed. The Top 5 Reasons You Got Backstabbed: #1 Annoyance Please, please, please confine comments in this threat to THIS particular explanation for stabs: a player's irri...

Re: Turkey is Overrated

@RoganJosh, that's incredible. Thank you for looking into this data. I am blown away by this statistic, flawed as it may be. It might be telling a just-so story, but maybe my record with France and Turkey in this big-bet game pool is poor because of the metagame that exists in high-bet matches. That...

Re: Turkey is Overrated

@RoganJosh no that’s awesome; I don’t keep track of my overall webDip stats in such an atomic way and I like to know more. I don’t think that bet size is a great proxy for the match quality. Octavious is right that for many years I was using it as a substitute for reliability rating. Invitational ga...

Re: Turkey is Overrated

In gunboat Diplomacy, as Turkey, I fear nobody. Austria and Russia rarely, if ever, cooperate -- let alone coordinate . Turkey can typically simultaneously war against both of them without causing those two powers to find a way to work together. They don't particularly care to see each other do well...

To your advice of "Gain Personal Experience" and "Gain Vicarious Experience", I'd add "Gain Gunboat Experience".
That was my advice in Part 2 “Tactics,” so I decided to suggest something siffernt in part 3 :-D

Although...I did suggest reading my gunboat guides as a starting point

Re: Webdip rank

As someone old enough to have played online games before matchmaking, ladders, and ranking... ...I assure you that making players feel accountable for their matches in some overall way is critical for putting most players into a mindset of playing each match in good faith. Online gaming is quite dif...

Re: Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 1: Politics

There's a lot to say about Strategy. (Surprise, Surprise)

Instead of publishing one titanic & unreadable article, I broke off a subsection and published as its own post. I consider it part of this series, but it could also stand alone.

The Top 5 Strategic Goals in Diplomacy

Enjoy!

Re: Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 2: Tactics

The thing about gunboat is that it's some kind of crapshoot, not a serious game. It doesn’t teach you much that's useful for Diplomacy, and does teach a lot of bad habits. A separate reply for this. I could not disagree more. Gunboat is not as deep as Press Diplomacy, and isn't terribly balanced, b...

Re: Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 1: Politics

But in Diplomacy you have a fantastic opportunity to agree with a neighbour a set of moves that will scream disinformation to any observer under the impression that tactics always trump politics. Give me a few weeks to finish the third article...this is what I'm hinting at by saying "we need to go ...

Re: Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 1: Politics

You can now read "Layer 2: Tactics" I guess this thread is now a little bit misnamed, but since I didn't get very many replies here, it seems silly to start another thread just for the second part. In the second part of this series, I offer my opinion that the Tactical Layer is deeper than Politics...

Diplomacy Games are Like Onions, Layer 1: Politics

Hello friends and foes. Here once again to promote my blog. Thanks for all the positive support. I guess there's only a handful of people writing blogs about Diplomacy. First article in a 3-part series. I say that the outermost layer is "Politics." Unlike some of my other writings, I have two in-dep...

Re: The Anti-France Meta

I have a private (family/friends) gunboat league and we've played 53 matches together since February 2017. I keep track of all the results on my own, and all sorts of statistics about the results (what self-respecting nerd would pass up the chance?) Among the players who have played more than 10 mat...

Re: Should Italy open west more?

As I've written before, Italy simply cannot ignore Austria and Turkey in favor of an attack on France. Austria and Turkey have no hope of solo winning without invading Italy. The same cannot be said about France. Introductions to Gunboat Diplomacy Solo Wins 5 Reasons I Love to Play as Italy in Gunbo...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Supposedly, luck plays a part in Diplomacy because... Version 1: Your opponent can out-think you in narrow end-game situations, so you should artificially randomize your moves. Version 2: Your opponent can't out-think you in narrow end-game situation, so no matter what any player does to decide thei...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Very good effort Mercy, very good. I really appreciate it, a concept that is difficult to communicate sincerely in a written discussion. I took your earlier Socratic question to be an effort to persuade me that there is a contradiction or weakness within my position. More specifically, I believe you...
