Re: When in Doubt... Build Fleets?

I agree mhsmith0 100%, and let me add this: The most straightforward path to French victory is to conquer the entire North + Tunis (DEFINITELY in gunboat, but in my opinion that also applies to press). If that is your path to victory, there are only 2 landlocked centers you need to control: Paris an...

Re: The Mediterranean Axis

In my ODC 2019 game 1 match (the one I wrote a giant journal about), an Italy/Austria/Turkey existed for some time, but of course Austria eventually got blown away. Italy and Turkey later played to a draw dominated by England (me). I anticipated for most of the match that Austria would be attacked b...

Online Diplomacy Championship 2019 Journal

Hello friends! I have now published the journal I kept while playing in my first game of the first round of the 2019 Online Diplomacy Championship. The first round is still ongoing, but the match covered by my journal is finished. There are more than 100 competitors in the tournament, including play...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

Next time someone updates the points list, would it be possible to also include the total number of players who finished games yet have zero points? That will make it easier to understand the implications of the list.

Re: Weak Press

You should understand what you want to accomplish strategically and tactically each turn before sending out and responding to messages. If you don’t have any idea of what is in your interest, if you don’t have clear goals, you will be manipulated by the other players. Your mastery of strategy and t...

Re: Weak Press

As I explained in the published portion of my ODC Journal, if you learn anything from me, learn this: You should understand what you want to accomplish strategically and tactically each turn before sending out and responding to messages. If you don’t have any idea of what is in your interest, if you...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

That one center can make or break your ranking The tension here is that making it into Round 2 is a binary condition. Let's say I have 50 points from game 1 (let's assume this to be an amount that leaves me uncertain about whether I will qualify for Round 2). Let's say that in game 2, my options ar...

Re: Weak Press

You can learn a lot from me: Online Diplomacy Championship Journal I am not finished getting all the pages ready for publication, but I'm more than halfway done. I'll post a self-promoting thread when the thing is finished. The editing process is miserable because of how challenging it was to write ...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

Sticking to the metagame, I think that Germany -- more often than not -- blocks Russia from moving into Sweden. In high-level matches, the German player might be clever enough to see the long-term disadvantages to bouncing Russia at Sweden when England has made a pro-France opening. But I think the ...

Re: Next level of gunboat metagame

It absolutely astounds me that the English gunboat meta is to open east and to avoid opening to English Channel. I think this is a significant contributing factor to why France seems so strong. I’ve played way, way too many games which begin with England throwing everything east (mangling Russia and...

Re: Italy/Austria in Gunboat

In my opinion, these are the tiers for gunboat Diplomacy: (A) Tier: No neighbor-ally is required to succeed, just discord among neighbors. Strong on offense and on defense. France (can simultaneously fight against England and Germany if they don’t cooperate; metagame disfavors early Italian attack i...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

....That's mathematically impossible as there's 28 players advancing to the Semis. 37 games total. One solo should seal the deal. FYI, per the rules there are only 21 players (not 28) advancing to the semis: https://sites.google.com/view/webdipinfo/classic-map-tournaments/online-diplomacy-champions...

Re: Solo Win Tip #1: Forget the Numbers Game

jmo, that's some really wonderful advice. Just last weekend, I was talking to a real-life friend who has played Diplomacy for about 2 years now and has never achieved a solo win. The conversation boiled down to this simple concept: positions matter more than centers. Most of the time, once you have ...

Re: Gunboat mentor

I'd like to learn more about the gamestyle, but I'm still a beginner and I'm afraid that at my level of competence, being coached would be a loss of the time for the mentor... Are there "fixed" resources like written guides or videos so that I can catch up and master the very basics? https://brothe...

Re: Drawing is the new winning?

Sum-of-squares scoring is miserable. Players give up and stop participating, or throw games, as soon as they're attacked or backstabbed. I recently played a SoS game where 2 players did this (one gave up and one tried to throw) after making bad openings in 1901. Nihilism is always the creeping probl...

Re: When to play a non-standard alliance in the east?

If you are playing as Turkey, do anything you can to dupe Austria into alliance. That's a great path to a solo win. If you are playing as Austria, any other power is a better ally then Turkey. Ally Turkey only as a last resort, because 1) you're probably going to get backstabbed by Turkey 2) you'll ...

Re: Very unsportsmanlike conduct

I personally use extreme levels of rudeness when I think it will get the results that I want. Examples of times when this is tactically useful: * You want to scare someone into thinking that you will really throw the game if they don't do as you ask. Players who go bananas when they don't get their ...
