Re: Solo Win Tip #1: Forget the Numbers Game

jmo, that's some really wonderful advice. Just last weekend, I was talking to a real-life friend who has played Diplomacy for about 2 years now and has never achieved a solo win. The conversation boiled down to this simple concept: positions matter more than centers. Most of the time, once you have ...

Friends, as usual, here's some shameless self-promotion of my blog.

I intend for this to be the first in a series of posts. Enjoy!

Re: Gunboat mentor

I'd like to learn more about the gamestyle, but I'm still a beginner and I'm afraid that at my level of competence, being coached would be a loss of the time for the mentor... Are there "fixed" resources like written guides or videos so that I can catch up and master the very basics? https://brothe...

Re: Drawing is the new winning?

Sum-of-squares scoring is miserable. Players give up and stop participating, or throw games, as soon as they're attacked or backstabbed. I recently played a SoS game where 2 players did this (one gave up and one tried to throw) after making bad openings in 1901. Nihilism is always the creeping probl...

Re: When to play a non-standard alliance in the east?

If you are playing as Turkey, do anything you can to dupe Austria into alliance. That's a great path to a solo win. If you are playing as Austria, any other power is a better ally then Turkey. Ally Turkey only as a last resort, because 1) you're probably going to get backstabbed by Turkey 2) you'll ...

Re: Very unsportsmanlike conduct

I personally use extreme levels of rudeness when I think it will get the results that I want. Examples of times when this is tactically useful: * You want to scare someone into thinking that you will really throw the game if they don't do as you ask. Players who go bananas when they don't get their ...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

To everyone who is disagreeing with me: please read my post again, then read on. I didn't say there is zero luck in Diplomacy. I said that it defies a common sense use of the English language to say that luck plays "a major role" in Diplomacy. English speakers, especially ones who have played a boar...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

5. Luck PLAYS a major role in Diplomacy. I think this statement is just plain wrong. Luck plays a major role in Poker (randomized card drawing), Axis and Allies (rolling cupfuls of dice), Settlers of Catan (again, dice), and even Magic: the Gathering (again, randomized cards). When people are talki...

As promised, I posted captainmeme's response essay to my blog. It's absolutely awesome to get a guest post, and I love that the blog now has an argument against my perspective.

Re: Why is gunboat so popular among the high ranked players

I realize I am repeating some points made earlier. But in short: Gunboat takes a small time commitment. If you log in once a day, you can submit your orders and be done with it. Gunboat requires a huge amount of self-reliance and experience. Newer players depend more on press to know what's happenin...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

If anyone is willing to write a contrary article about why experienced players sometimes prefer sum-of-squares scoring, I would gladly publish it on my blog as a guest post. It doesn't have to be long. I'd prefer something that is a stand-alone article on the benefits of SoS and limitations of DSS ...

Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

Hello my friends. I've written another post for my Diplomacy blog this month, once again in response to fan mail. In this article, I respond to the question of why so many players prefer to play draw-size scoring on this website. My response turned out to be about 8,000 words.... https://brotherbore...

I get compliments on my gunboat writings around here, so I figured I’d share this. I am trying to make diplomacy strategy writing a regular thing. I’ll take requests if you submit them to my blog.
