Re: Congrats to pw!!

Sounds like a blast! I have a tip re: declaring yourself to be a strong player. I employed that diplomatic tactic myself the most recent time I played as France. In my second game of the ODC, I flat out told a player attacking me that I was likely the #1 seed in the match and the strongest player. I...

Re: Let's Fix Russia's Gunboat Woes

I should add that I approve of this project and will add something creative and positive when it occurs to me. I’m not defeatist; we could improve gunboat and I think this is a very good way to do it.

Re: Let's Fix Russia's Gunboat Woes

More importantly I'm not sure it's so easy for Turkey to just build in Ankara to counter the telegraphed threat (which I agree is telegraphed rather gracelessly). Italy's most common opening by a significant margin is the Lepanto. Can Turkey really afford not to build a fleet in Smyrna and ignore t...

Re: Let's Fix Russia's Gunboat Woes

Y’all are over-estimating Russia’s ability to take Black Sea by force, and whether it’s even beneficial for Russia to do. If Russia builds a second southern fleet, then Russia has 2 useless units instead of 1. The intention to attack Turkey is completely telegraphed and Turkey can usually block it o...

Re: Welcome Aurelin to the mod team!

This is a very good decision. I am glad to see this announcement. Aurelin cares as much about this hobby as any of us, and has been a very good friend to me. A while back I was Aurelin’s mentor and look where we are now. Wow.

I would have stabbed on principle. Also, solo wins will be used as tiebreakers.

Re: New to the game, and advice would be appreaciated

My blog is aimed at beginner/intermediate players, take a look-see:

https://brotherbored.com/diplomacy/

I recommend playing 1v1 at least 5 times before starting a “real” match so that you know how not to mess up your orders.

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Discussion (finished games only)

I just want to say that... http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=237254 ....I can't believe I sort of actually know these two jokers and saw this result. Made my day. I really enjoyed seeing this Brumark and Sweetwater. Very funny. You'd never see me do this, but still I enjoyed it. Says a lot ab...

Re: Super High Bet Press Game

I really liked Apocalypstik (hey I got in the draw, maybe that’s why but who knows!) and would totally play another premier match like that....but I seem likely to get into round 2 of the ODC so I think I gotta pass. I just wanted to let you all know that I’m interested in such things and you can re...

Tier List for Gunboat Diplomacy

Hello friends, I've written a new article: BrotherBored's Tier List for Gunboat Diplomacy This article places each of the 7 powers into "Tiers" of strength. I explain how the no-press rule alters each country's capabilities and gives rise to the peculiar Gunboat metagame. I've also got some advice f...

Re: When in Doubt... Build Fleets?

I agree mhsmith0 100%, and let me add this: The most straightforward path to French victory is to conquer the entire North + Tunis (DEFINITELY in gunboat, but in my opinion that also applies to press). If that is your path to victory, there are only 2 landlocked centers you need to control: Paris an...

Re: The Mediterranean Axis

In my ODC 2019 game 1 match (the one I wrote a giant journal about), an Italy/Austria/Turkey existed for some time, but of course Austria eventually got blown away. Italy and Turkey later played to a draw dominated by England (me). I anticipated for most of the match that Austria would be attacked b...

Online Diplomacy Championship 2019 Journal

Hello friends! I have now published the journal I kept while playing in my first game of the first round of the 2019 Online Diplomacy Championship. The first round is still ongoing, but the match covered by my journal is finished. There are more than 100 competitors in the tournament, including play...

Next time someone updates the points list, would it be possible to also include the total number of players who finished games yet have zero points? That will make it easier to understand the implications of the list.

Re: Weak Press

You should understand what you want to accomplish strategically and tactically each turn before sending out and responding to messages. If you don’t have any idea of what is in your interest, if you don’t have clear goals, you will be manipulated by the other players. Your mastery of strategy and t...

Re: ODC 2019 Tournament Start

That one center can make or break your ranking The tension here is that making it into Round 2 is a binary condition. Let's say I have 50 points from game 1 (let's assume this to be an amount that leaves me uncertain about whether I will qualify for Round 2). Let's say that in game 2, my options ar...
