Re: Winning as Austria against bots?
First (and only) time I played as Austria with bots, I won with a crushing 20 centers solo. I didn't even realize it was so difficult to do! http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=319487#gamePanel It's harder against bots than in real games because all the bots are convinced that they should get ...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
To me, the fact that different people value and prioritise different things in different ways is what makes this game so interesting and endlessly playable. It is the diversity in our player base that allows for variety in gameplay. Watching people in this thread try to beat out that diversity make...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
If you play chess against someone with a higher rating than you, you may aim for a draw and people will think you did well if you succeed in that goal. Ok let me rephrase that: if you're playing against a higher rated player in chess, and he blunders hanging his queen, you don't take it because you...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
But if you play chess against a player with higher rating than you, you still try to win. You may never succeed, but at least you try. It's the same in diplomacy.

Re: Elimination Conditions
I think giving the player the right to draw, like webdiplomacy does, is the right choice, even though it's probably not what the creators of the game intended.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
Ιf a player is not a strong one he cannot aspire to a solo he has to go with a draw. I think that's such a wrong statement. The draw is what you must aspire to when it's clear you can't win after the game has been going on for a while. Starting a game with the assumption "I can't possibly win, I'll...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
So instead of going down the poker rabbit hole about what exactly “soft play” means, I’ll just remark to the OP what I said originally: all you can do is to understand the mentality of these drawmongers so that you can beat them over the board. There is nothing unethical, in Diplomacy ethics, about...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
No, because when you enter a game of Diplomacy you enter a contest to gain 18 centres (or whatever the win requirement is for your particular variant). The assumption should always be that your ally is also trying to win, and has positioned himself as your ally in order to achieve this goal. The ga...

Yeah, also your games are shorter that way, and you don't have to worry about giving orders to your units for much time longer.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
Yeah, I meant that I felt that our behaviour towards the French player was "honourable", since Prince William and others were arguing about what constitutes being honourable in diplomacy. I don't consider "honourable" going for a 2-way draw no matter what though, so I think we agree :)

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
In a game I recently had I was England and in the game I had almost reached a stalemate position with a Russia-Austria alliance. They knew that, if they betrayed each other, that would lead to me soloing, so they would never do it. There was also a French player reduced to just one center (after I h...

I just wanted to ask: why doesn't webdiplomacy have an interactive board like vdiplomacy? I find that very useful, especially when I have a lot of armies and fleets.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
I read the public press of that game, just out of curiosity. I shouldn't have. Such arrogance from Austria, I'm sorry you had to bear with him for the duration of the game. I guess he's happy not winning. Sucks to be him.

Re: Elimination Conditions
Wow, that game you linked is the perfect example of this, with both France and Russia in exile and with no troops. Very cool. I agree that it shouldn't count as an elimination, so I approve webdip's stance on this, but I admit that I would probably kill off such a country during a game. There are on...

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?
I'm currently on my 14th game of diplomacy, so I'm still pretty inexperienced, but I think it's against the spirit of the game not to aim for the best result possible. That said, here's my personal experience on 2-way draws, I think it might be funny. I get Germany in a game, ally with Italy from th...
