Re: diplomacy online history

The Ken Lowe judge started in 1987, so yes for something from the 1980s.

Re: Scoring systems - proportional to supply centres

The simple system you propose is better than squares, and fairly similar to KISS (http://daanz.org/sc-kis.htm). KISS has not been used much, but Cricket, which is similar again, has been used successfully. I do not understand the popularity of squares. The first place it appeared to my knowledge was...

Re: Theory/strategy books?

Diplomatic Pouch has some good stuff. diplomacy-archive.com is good too. It also contains the only full-length strategy book I know of: The Game of Diplomacy, by Richard Sharp. In terms of books, there's also Conor Kostick's "The Art of Correspondence in the Game of Diplomacy". This is geared towar...

Re: Bug or I misunterstood the rules?

There's a newer rulebook available online (easy to search and find) that is the 5th edition from 2008. In keeping with a tradition of bloat, it is an even larger pdf file.

Re: How does this resolve?

Italian SMY-CON succeeds and dislodges CON. (2v1)
Russian ANK-SMY succeeds too.

Re: Auto Move Where Player Has No Choice

The confusing thing here (and what might be considered a bug) is that if you go to archived orders it repeats Springs orders as orders for Fall, even though Fall never actually happened. The way we handle ending a game gets kinda weird for... reasons Yes this was really confusing to me. I looked at...

Re: Auto Move Where Player Has No Choice

@Squigs44, of course supply centres are not supposed to be updated until after retreats. In the game that qrzy linked to, the fall retreats have been adjudicated and the supply centre charts have not been updated to account for Austria's capture of TUN.

Re: Auto Move Where Player Has No Choice

That is one weird edge case. I had no idea that webdiplomacy didn't update the supply centre chart after adjudicating the fall retreats phase. I would call it a bug.

Re: Auto Move Where Player Has No Choice

qrzy's post doesn't make sense to me. We are talking about the builds phase where a player has already been eliminated, so they cannot participate in any draw. I was just caught out by this today and received a warning in a live game that I missed my adjustment after elimination. Sorry to the player...

Nice.

Now you've solved it with HEL moved to HOL, I prefer the puzzle to have the fleet in HOL instead of HEL.

Solution to Puzzle 6: (WARNING, SPOILERS) Germany: F BAL S BER, A RUH & A BUR S MUN, A GAS-NWY, F HEL-DEN, F SWE S GAS-NWY. England: F NWY-STP, F NTH, F ENG & F MAO C GAS-NWY, BRE-GAS. The only interesting case is when STP-NWY is bounced by MOS, then NWY should retreat to BAR. The hardest case is wh...

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

I have a solution that works if Russia is hostile (and building).

What is the etiquette here with such things - do we post the spoiler, provide the solution in a private message or do you all trust my grandiose claims without proof?

Re: 1v1 Puzzles

A further puzzle that is a continuation of #3.

If you are GMing a game, or playing a game where a probability 1 win appears, what do you do?

P.S. For those confused, a probability 1 win means that for all p<1, France can find a strategy that wins with probability at least p.

Re: Smallest Turtling Position

Yes it should be ARM instead of SMY. Bad typo on my part. I think on the east side it’s actually unit con/arm holding con/smy/ank? The units proposed can’t hold Bulgaria, and if an enemy army gets into arm, then I don’t think any of the Turkish centers can be held. I guess you could say a smy comsta...

Re: Smallest Turtling Position

The smallest southern stalemate position is U SPA, U POR S SPA, F WES S SPA, U NAF, U CON, U SMY, holding the 6 centres CON, BUL, ANK, TUN, SPA and POR, against an EG alliance that has no fleets in the Mediterranean.
