Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

First off, has anyone actually flipped a coin or used RNG to determine their moveset beyond maybe the first set of moves in a gunboat game? Interesting question. In gunboat, no, but I almost never play gunboat. Having played many hundreds of different board games, I've had discussions of this type ...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

e.g. one could have only kicks and extends for players who controlled more than two supply centers. Something like this may be worthwhile to look into as an option, as it apparently can work with the webdip code. That would certainly be a huge improvement. Especially in World games, players with <=...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

After the change, are those 7+ SC positions more or less common, or about the same? Do you think this has biased your view on the change? The change is new and I usually only play a game or two at a time, so it'd take years to answer your first question with any accuracy. As for the second question...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

Sure, so the problem is that you're pretending that new players couldn't and didn't come into games before and take over worse positions. That still used to happen (100,000+ times), it just used to happen for a more messed up position. That hasn't changed at all with the new system. What changes is...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

games aren't impacted nearly as drastically when a replacement comes in as they take over a position that hasn't missed turns. Overall the stats and player feedback are showing the change as an overall win. When a newbie replacement comes in and does something random (as they do repeatedly, because...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

I don't know how to reconcile this for you. Your idea of what is fun and what isn't is yours and yours alone. My idea of fun is playing an unbroken game. 1) There will always be broken games. In one game I'm in (242303), two of the biggest countries just NMRd. One was replaced by an experienced pla...

Did you email the mods about this?
I did, but I don't know when they'll see it, so I commented here as well in case it was some new "feature" I'd missed.

I don't know how to reconcile this for you. Your idea of what is fun and what isn't is yours and yours alone. My idea of fun is playing an unbroken game. If you think that, then you are simply ignoring the comments in games as people gripe about how much the delays suck. And now I'm in a game where...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

but for now the prevailing thought is that delaying the game when a player is absent is a better result for the integrity of the game than allowing the turn to process without a power placing orders. How about the enjoyment of the game? You look forward to playing a turn each day (or whatever your ...

Re: Changed RR, Missed Turns, and Game Create

2) There are no automatic replacents. Someone has to physically press a button to decide to join. It stands to reason that means they're interested in entering orders for that country in its current position. Experience shows that reason (by your standards and mine) does not work here! Most of the ...

Re: New Menu

I have two suggestions: 1) Search, Games, etc, used to be links, which meant you could right-click/open in new tab. Now, they aren't, so you can't. "click/move down list/right-click/open in new tab" is vastly more time-consuming. Can those go back to being links? 2) In game listings, "Join" and "Spe...

Re: Home Page Updates

This is almost psychedelic. Every time I refresh the home page, all of the colour bars on my finished game statuses change. I need to stop just sitting here clicking refresh and hoping to see a pattern! :-) btw, probably unrelated, but the last map on this game has no colour on any regions, so you c...

Re: Development Feedback

Wouldn't your browser cache accomplish the exact same thing? No, not really. Browsers tend to re-fetch files unnecessarily a great deal of the time. (esp. images, javascript, css) A proxy can be set to just serve those files to the client regardless of the expiry times set by the client or the part...

Who on Earth in 2019 can't spare cycles and bandwidth for https? WebDip isn't exactly a high-performance microservice. I would much rather a guarantee that the password I use for a bunch of sites isn't being sent in plaintext. Fine, so use https if you care. There's no need to force others to use i...

Re: Development Feedback

The only recent change I'd noticed was that the totals on http://webdiplomacy.net/gamelistings.php are sensible. It used to be that "Joinable" would give a total roughly 10 times the real value. We already have https enabled. Auto redirecting to it is on the todo list though. Feel free to leave that...

Re: New Live World Diplomacy Game

Fair enough. And in the event of a real life crisis, does that fall under the category of an exception? I wouldn't call a real life crisis an exception. I'd call it one of the very few reasons for a pause in the first place. I guess if someone's crisis is ongoing, there's a point where you have to ...

Re: New Live World Diplomacy Game

And regarding the pauses, you're right. We're in limbo right now and I don't see any way out of it. I think a live game should be a live game. If there's a really good reason to pause, then unpause at a multiple of 24 hours after the initial start, on the assumption that those who could start at th...

Re: New Live World Diplomacy Game

What jmo was saying has some promise behind it. Play until a bunch of people can't, and then from there, play it normally as a day/phase game. Then you have a bunch of different issues. What is "a bunch"? Any non-deterministic approach just doesn't seem fitting with Diplomacy. And what if I have 5 ...

Re: New Live World Diplomacy Game

Two more! We can do it! Well done for making it. I'm not in it, because the 4am start was just too inconvenient. (And if I'd sacrificed sleep and then the game ended up paused, that would be even worse.) It'd be interesting to try again at different start time. Also, given how big forces get in Wor...

Re: Why Players Prefer Draw-Size Scoring

An interesting read. It's particularly interesting that people think that way. I believe the statement "Let me point out that most webDiplomacy players do not really care about the points" is correct and negates almost everything else in the article. Personally, I often don't even remember which sco...
