Re: If you could change one thing...

The biggest flaw on the classic map is the main stalemate line. Subdivide Spain or STP (preferably Spain, if you can only pick one) into 2-3 territories and it fixes many problems. Of course some may say that the main stalemate line is part of the game and therefore not a flaw at all, which is a val...

Re: Excused missed turns for replacement players

I think there should be a ranking in the hall of fame that counts the number of games taken over by people. These saints need the recognition. We used to have yearly awards which also recognised the person that took over most CDs. Unfotunately, the admins are very busy. In addition, for some reason...

Re: Gunboat Stats

I would guess the Finland opening scores highly because (1) it is the only way to communicate to Germany that you are pro-them and (2) the only people who would think about that angle instead of just moving Bothnia (which is strictly superior in press) are probably more skilled than usual, so their ...

Re: Favourite country and why?

Germany and Russia in press, as they have lots of flexibility and tend to dictate what happens on the board rather than vice versa. England is my least favorite by far, as it is generally subject to the whims of France/Germany and to a lesser extent Russia. If Turkey gets ganged up on by Austria/Rus...

Re: How often do games draw?

From my point of view, the incentive to whittle out players is a feature —not a flaw. I agree with this (though I almost exclusively play press). My stats rival the carebears' posted upthread, but if anything I think we need more whittling, not less. The threat of being whittled down the road, and ...

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

Do you think that these metrics make players better, or allow you to only play with better players? Or rather - they obviously do the latter. Do they also do the former? I think there is probably a significant divide between gunboat and press games. I'm not sure anyone who plays a significant numbe...

Re: All Diplomacy Scoring Stinks

I think that the quality of play is far higher on webDip than other websites I have dabbled in. I think the main reason is all the metrics we use to track results. Do you think that these metrics make players better, or allow you to only play with better players? Or rather - they obviously do the l...

Had to fight through a brutal CD by another player to get to it, but here it is:

You also had the aid of an opponent who didn't realize dropped players weren't replaced with bots on this site ;)

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

To me, the fact that different people value and prioritise different things in different ways is what makes this game so interesting and endlessly playable. It is the diversity in our player base that allows for variety in gameplay. Watching people in this thread try to beat out that diversity make...

Let's give him a bit to join but we can look for one soon if he's holding the game up from starting.
If you do end up needing a replacement, I am happy to join in.

Re: How Do We Feel About Not Even Trying to Win?

New Diplomacy player here. I'm sure other players have a much more stronger thoughts on this, but I just finished a game on another site where three players (a Western Triple) had clearly decided early on to play for a draw. Italy was stabbed and reduced to 1 center, so ended up supporting the inva...
