Re: Has Diplomacy Regressed to Just Lying?

If you solo from time to time you're doing it right. If you never solo you're doing it wrong. It's that simple. Those who see the game as an exercise in forming a game long alliance have misunderstood the concept and are robbing their fellow players of an enjoyable experience. I hate having to agre...

Re: Introducing the first ever webDiplomacy Terminator Tournament!

Its very interesting actually and not sure if swordsman has any thing to say on this, but I found my few bots games very challenging. I don't think I realised how much of my play was all about the psychology of those I was playing against, and bots game have none of that feel (maybe also because i d...

Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

Be mindful that the dataset is larger when you include games not played on webDiplomacy. I will not be drawn into a discussion on whether PPSC or PlayDip produces worse players :p Obviously diluting our PPSC games with games from other sites is good, but better yet to purge the games altogether if ...

If England doesn't get stabbed its a perfect platform for her to snowball from. I don't know why anyone would actually follow through on it though. Novel doesn't make it good.

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Skill plays no part in Diplomacy because free will is an illusion. All your victories and defeats are predetermined. Fate is inexorable. Alfred the Great would disagree, Uhtred. But if true, then it proves the case that there is neither luck nor chance in Diplomacy as well. EVERYONE IS CORRECT!

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Any game that involves tactical situations in which a player may break a stalemate line and win the game if they correctly choose one of three seemingly equally-meritorious moves involves luck. Diplomacy can involve these situations and accordingly is a game with luck. This is especially true since...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

@wusti Several of the top ranked 1v1 player on this site regularly uses random number generators. These are the players with the strongest tactical skills, and they most definitely spend more time on their calculations than the avarage player. Still, sometimes they end upp randomizing. Only in 1v1 ...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

@ Rogan Josh - I have no shame for reading the entire thread and disagreeing with you. Further, the application of game theory mathematics to the vast bulk of diplomacy games is laughable. Theoretical arguments in this regard ignore the actual practices of the players of games (I agree that the Iain...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

I understand what you are saying but I don't agree with your premise. I actually think Diplomacy situations are much more similar to generic interpersonal relations. What I mean by that is when we meet people in social or work situations, a very low percentage of communication and signalling is over...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Literally nothing in your post was correct from a game analysis standpoint. I'll have to over the weekend to explain why. I'm expecting fireworks. And I'll be quite disappointed if I only get a list of anecdotes intended to prove that one (or more) of the players was prone to tactical mistakes. Al ...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Always a fun topic. Of course luck plays a role, and a rather large one. The most finely crafted piece of persuasive argument is utterly useless if the chap you send it to has just had a major argument with his significant other and has better things to do than read it. The first messages we send l...
