Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

I think that move is defensible, too. Would any move have been strictly better than Spa - MAO?

Re: AI bots on webDiplomacy: Skynet edition!

Awesome work!! I found out that the AI just stalemates itself eternally... My game was Let's go bots!-2 Ah, you mean https://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=246292? That looks super funny. :P The drawback of this training method is that it requires lots of human examples. We can also train the mod...

Re: Can you support another player into your own territory?

Yes, you can, but you cannot help to dislodge your own units. For example, suppose you have a fleet in the North Sea and you support a fleet to North Sea from Edinburgh with a fleet in London. If your fleet in the North Sea fails to move out of it, it will not be dislodged and the attack from Edinbu...

I recommend joining any game with some form of press. If you have read and understand the rules regarding game mechanics, there is no reason to start with a 1v1 game.

Re: Arctic Ocean - NWT move?

I see. According to the original variant homepage, Beaufort Sea and Nunavut should not be connected though, yet they are: https://vdiplomacy.net/dev.php?tab=Map&variantID=20&mode=all&edit=off&mapsize=small&mapmode=all&terrID=120&terrID=121 I'd therefore call it either a mixture of a bug and bad draw...

Re: Arctic Ocean - NWT move?

On our sister site vDiplomacy I have verified that you indeed can move from Arctic Ocean to North West Territories. https://vdiplomacy.net/dev.php?tab=Map&variantID=20&mode=all&edit=off&mapsize=small&mapmode=all&terrID=0&terrID=120 This must be an adjacency bug, because the two territories are not d...

Re: Alternative Counter Set / Sprites

It is possible to change the look of units, as well as to give units a distinctive look for each country. vDiplomacy features many maps in which this is the case. Take, for example, this variant: https://vdiplomacy.net/variants.php?variantID=155 In this map you can see the units: https://vdiplomacy....

They are if you look at the preview map. There are a bunch of buttons just underneath the map. You have to click the one on the right.

Re: Bul/Con fleet swap

That makes sense. I provided an example, though, where you want to switch places with an enemy unit, too. If my fleet would've been an army, goldfingers move would still have been great.

Re: Bul/Con fleet swap

That double convoy with fleets in bla and aeg is a rare and beautiful thing So you can make two armies switch places?.. :eyeroll: Yes, you didn't know? As an example of two units switching places, in http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=200334 goldfinger switched the position of an army of his ...

Re: Newbie - Played 1xGvI, looking for Classic within 14 days

If you want to play a 7-player game that finishes before two weeks, you can still play a live game. I recommend being online when this game starts: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=244410 Probably someone will be kicked out of the game due to missing orders at the very start, in which case y...

You have to select a 1v1 variant type. The two 1v1 variant types are ClassicFvA and ClassicGvI.

Re: Anatomy of a Critical Gunboat Turn: Austria, Autumn 01 - Spring 03

I have never played a gunboat game that was non-live or was filled with experienced players, and I have little clue to the meta. Let me give my thoughts. The first map is after Spring 1901. https://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=242309&turn=0&mapType=large You are Austria. What orders are you antic...

It's too bad I did not correctly anticipate where you were going with your analogy. I'm disappointed in myself that I anticipated your thinking incorrectly. However, I am also disappointed that your intention was to circle back to and re-state arguments that I dealt with on my blog posts before thi...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

I indeed intended to to show an analogy between the 10-round Chess-Dice metagame and Diplomacy, but the analogy wasn't the literal analogy you came up with. No, a while back players in this thread argued that some chance elements in the game included: - How your neighbors play the metagame. Are you ...

Swordsman, let me answer these questions for you. 1A. Yes 1B. Yes 1C. Yes 1D. Yes 1E. Yes I understand that you argued to me that Diplomacy’s resemblance to (or entanglement with) the general human experience is the source of the game’s luck. If I believe your statement that luck comes from the huma...

Re: Luck Plays No Part in Diplomacy

Luck plays a part in Diplomacy. Less so than in a game like Risk, but more so than in a game like Chess. Other people have already pointed out that, in a gunboat match, you have no control over the opening moves of the other players. I think it is appropriate to call it 'lucky' or 'unlucky' if the o...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

After having read some of the other comments, I see that some people are complaining that the game gets extended for countries that are almost eliminated anyway. In the old NMR system on vDip, one could differentiate between these, e.g. one could have only kicks and extends for players who controlle...

Re: Excused Missed Turns is inefficient ?

AWESOME changes to the way NMRs are handled! This new system is almost as good, if not better (!), than the old system on vDip.
