It's more a question of whether the stupid mob will listen to reason. For instance
Trump supporters attacking journalists covering a Trump rally. With Trump calling reporters "enemies of the state" we have had some rallies where the mob will stop and listen without continuing their attacks and others where they will continue attacking no matter what is said.

For society it is better with stupid people since they are less likely to be able to persuade others into stupid ideas and viewpoints.
You have never seen mob rule with the stupid encouraging the stupid.
But if smart people bother to engage, there is a good chance they may get into control of such a mob and lead it onto a better path... Are smart people too lazy or too smart to get engaged?

Trump went with both, because when you are rich it doesn't matter. People will make excuses for you to gain access to your money. :)
