These changes are live now.

Huh? This isn't how you are supposed to change TOS for websites!

TOS changes should be buried in 100+ page agreements and whilst you certainly should tell people that **something** has changed, you should leave it as an exercise for people to figure out what the changes actually were...

I think this one should be changed from
"• I agree not to make alliances based on out of game relationships.
"
to
"
I agree to play without regard to my out of game relationships
"
Attacking someone because you don't like them is just as against the rules as allying with someone because you do.

The idea is a good one. One small suggestion. From an English as a second language perspective, it may be worth replacing the word subvert with something a little more common.
*work around <-- change made to the PR on git. Good point.

That's a fair point. Thanks for the suggestion.

How does rule #5 impact press in games, and if there is an anon game that someone I know joins without my knowledge, could that be a problem? I want to get my irl friends into this game
The rules apply to everyone in every situation, but if it is clear there was no malicious intent and that you came to us as soon as you knew what was happening, the moderators understand. We'll handle it and move on.

I am in agreement with this statement here. I recently discovered that I am in the same public game as a friend of mine (who I have stated on my profile as someone I know in real life.) However, we are not working together in any way and are actually working against one another. I discovered this in 1904.
Then you are breaking a site rule and should email the mods at [email protected] asap and discuss what to do about that situation with them.
Thank you for the clarification. I've done so.

Does not rule 3 make rule 4 unnecessary?
In addition to what jmo said, the purpose of this agreement is not to set the rules, but to make the most important rules abundantly clear in short and simple terms. In the event of an investigation, each of those two points in the agreement both fall under the existing metagaming rule, but from the perspective of a new player, it makes more sense to treat them as separate points.

To clarify the apparent confusion, these are not amendments or additions to the existing site rules. This is a summation of the existing site rules presented in a user-friendly manner to new players that join the site. This way, new players receive the most important information out of our rules without being asked to dive head first into a long, tedious list of rules that they may or may not even understand before they ever play a game.

I added this to the OP to prevent this from confusing anyone else.

Does not rule 3 make rule 4 unnecessary? And does "friend" in rule 4 include people you've met via this website and get on well with, or is it purely offsite friendship?

And I assume the respect rule applies only to the forum? I could feasibly fake respect even for complete prats like scientologists, but in games surely we are at liberty to be as respectful or disrespectful as we wish?
No, 3 means you can't ally with someone in game A to get someone to support your move in game X. Rule 4 is designed to prevent any unfair play between friends such as being more prone to attack them which we see as much as friends helping each other.

Go read the rules page, there are in depth guidelines on what you can and cannot do in game press. You may not be disrespectful to the point of making real life threats or sexual harassment, same as always. These changes are to what new users see, they are not changes to the existing site rules, they simply direct users to the important ones.

I think the 4th one should say something about providing notice to players in open games if you do want to play in a public game
I think "public" means "not password protected" here, but I agree it's a good idea to ask people to make that knowledge available even in "public" private games.
Oh I see. Maybe just reword it then.

New Site User Agreement

by bo_sox48 » Sat Jan 19, 2019 7:25 pm

As part of our ongoing changes to new user registration to make webDiplomacy more open and welcome to new members, all new players will be asked to explicitly agree to the following upon creating their account:
• I agree not to create more than one account.
• I agree not to subvert game communication rules.
• I agree not to make alliances based on out of game relationships.
• I agree not to play public games with family, or friends.
• I agree to treat all members with respect regardless of race, religion, gender, or creed.
If you are reading this and logged in at the same time, then you already have a registered account with us, so nothing is required of you. Your agreement to our site rules is implicit. Please do not signify your agreement to the new site user agreement explicitly by creating a new account simply in order to go through registration again. However, if you would like to signify your agreement to the new site user agreement explicitly, feel free to press the "+1" button on this post below.

Thank you to CommanderByron for writing this, as well as rewriting our registration page and ongoing work to multiple other pages on the site.
