Claesar, are you sure that “don’t read the rules” is the position you want to be taking as a moderator?

Rulebook? That's like a manual. No man reads that stuff.

English spellings of French names are often different. I quite enjoy "Marseilles", from the French "Marseille". I guess English speakers figured there must have been an extra silent letter there, and so added one.

Related fun fact: Google Maps set to UK English says "Marseilles", set to US English it says "Marseille".

I believe Gulf of Lyon is an old spelling, which (while largely out of fashion) was still used at the time of Diplomacy's publication. You can see it on older maps. Similarly with Rumania (now Romania).

sorry with an o, typo

Golfe du Lion

but is was named by the Romans even before the French.

the actual name is:

Gulfe du Lion, and it is not pronounced at all like the English word "lion" the big cat, The first syllable has a ee sound, not an i sound. So it's sort of like lee - ON, but the on is nasal sound unique to French. It sounds nothing like Lion in English.

My bookshelf game version of Diplomacy spells "Eastern Mediterrranean" with three Rs.

I've never seen it spelled with an i. Maybe it's different in Dutch?

I am also Dutch, and i have never seen it spelled that way.

Why are you all just Lyon around? Get to work!

"Lion" could be the French spelling. But I've always seen it spelled with a "y" instead.

It is indeed spelled 'Gulf of Lion', according to the English wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Lion

I think you're lyon to me.
Lyon? Only in Kenya.

Google suggest it should be Gulf of Lion, so I'm not even sure where this name came from.

There’s also Galacia/Galicia depending on the map.
Wikipedia insists that's a typo.

The small map is only capable of containing one Lyon, whereas the large map has a larger Gulf capable of containing multiple Lyons.
