05 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1903: GameMaster: tab has taken over Russia.
06 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1903: I can see why people get upset at others for dropping out.
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: Why is Russia in civil disorder already? They gave an order to move, just not to retreat.
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: Just someone logged in to screw with me I bet.
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: yeah... i don't know when it puts you in CD
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: The forum told me (when I asked after France dropped out the first time) after two separate phases of missing orders. So France (this time) gave no orders for Spring movement and also none for Spring retreat, but since they didn't ~have~ any retreat moves to make, that doesn't count, and they'll go into CD after they make no Autumn move orders.

But Russia made Spring move orders and only missed the retreat orders. So they're going into CD early.

The only thing I can think of is that the Forum told me that one phase is enough if you're down to only 1 SC. Perhaps they got it wrong and the real rule is if you're down to only 2. Then Russia would qualify.
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: But then so would France, so that doesn't work!
08 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: maybe 1 unit?
09 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: Hmm, so after they failed to send in retreat orders, they were down to 1 unit, which immediately set the timeout to 1 phase, which timeout therefore immediately kicked in.

Arguably a bug to do it that way, which is kind of retroactive, but possibly quite natural to program and explains the facts. I like it!
09 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: The danger with Western Mediterranean is if Mid-Altantic Ocean and Spain move together (one supporting the other) into it. If Lyon supports into Marseilles, which seems necessary, then I cannot keep the Mediterranean safe without holding there.

Not that your idea is no good; I'm already considering it. But that's the danger.
09 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: Um … everybody ignore that! (That's what I get for using multiple tabs and Javascript.)
09 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1903: yup.
11 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1904: GameMaster: Airborne soldier has taken over France.
12 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1904: Anyone else notice our latest France is already CD in their other game?
13 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1904: Our France is playing in some other games too now. Good for you, France, I had been worried!
14 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1904: I will Finalize my orders at 7:00 UTC (that's 7:00 GMT, 2:00 Eastern, 11pm Pacific).
14 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1904: You are one precise fellow. Everyone is finalized though.

Pull the trigger, brother!
15 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1905: GameMaster: MatGB has taken over France.
15 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1905: Nice Spanish wine here. *slurps*

Who let the English into Portugal? Doesn't everyone know that's a bad idea, they get drunk and wreck the place. Hi all, couldn't resist after seeing the forum thread.
17 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1905: I think France has been drinking too much again
17 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1905: A boring stalemate line?

Or abandon my ally, lower my defences, and go on a wild spree in the northern waves?

I am going to sleep on it.
18 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1905: Sorry for taking so long, I was waiting for someone to talk me out of it.
18 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: I didn't think that you'd listen to me. :-)
But, yes, you did choose the more interesting path. Huzzah!
18 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: Funny, you must have left the plus sign out of my email address. :-)
18 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: Actually I didn't contact you... since I didn't think that you'd listen to me.
(I had no idea that plus signs and some other symbols were allowed by some email systems... I had to look that up to confirm it. Did you realize that Hotmail and some other systems actually block users from emailing someone with a symbol in their email address?)
18 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: Sorry, I thought you were trying to imply (as a joke, hence the smiley) that you didn't think I'd listened to you but, fortunately, I had.

I know that some websites with badly configured Javascript will refuse to accept an email address with a plus sign, but I didn't know that any services designed for email did so. That would be only a minor bug for somebody that might not get my business but a serious bug in Hotmail, which is all about email.

The plus sign is of course an antispam device. The vast majority of my spam goes to toby@ugcs.caltech.edu, which I never read. Very occasionally I get spam to an email address with a plus sign, and since I use a different one on every web site, I know where the problem is and can fix that (then send subsequent email to that particular form to the spam folder too). So most months, I never see any spam.

You can put anything (or nothing) after the plus sign, and it goes to me. A lot of longstanding academic email systems have this feature, which is one reason why I still use my undergrad email address. One can also do this with Gmail.
18 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: Interesting. I tend to simply change my overall address when I start getting tons of email (every couple of years). Thanks.
19 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1905: Don't forget to finalize Toby ;)
24 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: /draw
24 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: GameMaster: Toby Bartels has voted for a draw.
Voted: Toby Bartels Remaining: Dexter.Morgan,oldbenjamin,natesmith,ag7433.
24 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: Actually, I forgot that Austria would be included in this vote still. Not that I mind particularly.
24 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: Immediately Austria is removed from the game, then the need of Austria to vote goes.

Had a game pause once unexpectedly, the player that hadn't voted got knocked out, retreats resolved and *poof* game paused.

We unpaused it and I got stabbed by the winner.
25 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: Where should I disband?
25 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: doesn't really matter
25 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: obviously i'd prefer wales, but it won't matter as soon as you're out of SCs
25 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: I concur
25 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1906: So you three have got it all worked out how to divide me up, and have no opinion on the order I disband and the effect this has on your movements? Very well.
25 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1907: /undraw
25 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1907: GameMaster: Toby Bartels has withdrawn his vote for a draw.

26 Feb 09 UTC Spring, 1907: italy man, you're the one who wants the draw here
26 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1907: No point if you've got it all worked out already. All I can do is try to go in an interesting way.
27 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1908: /draw
27 Feb 09 UTC Autumn, 1908: GameMaster: Toby Bartels has voted for a draw.
