Spring, 1902: Gentlemen, gentlemen, please, keep calm and carry on.
Spring, 1902: Btw, we clearly found patsy number 1. Proceed with caution Eastern Europe.
Spring, 1902: Dawg ain’t no need to for harsh words. Tell you what, how about I swing around your place with a decent food culture?
Spring, 1902: Oh god, really? Yeah the food here is terrible. I take it all back.
Spring, 1902: Let them eat wurst.

Autumn, 1902: *Loads baguette cannon*
Autumn, 1902: No one ever expects a bunch of Austrians to just randomly show up in Sevastopol.
Autumn, 1902: That was what we call a “planned retreat.” The Mongolian Ordu used that tactic with great success in their first Russian Campaign.
Spring, 1903: Nobody expects a Sevastish transposition!
Autumn, 1903: Look. This is it for me. I have nothing to gain. Russia, Turkey, Austria, Italy. Listen up, assholes. Look at the fucking board. France and Germany are going to kill all of you. Stop bumping around down there fighting each other like a bunch of drunks. You look like the Lone Rangers trying to hold a radio station hostage. You look like Spinal Tap except you are all Derek Smalls trying to escape from a cocoon. Talk to each other. Work together. Defeat the Westerners. If you don’t get your shit together soon, you will all die. Try for a 4 way draw. It’s your only hope. |

Autumn, 1903: Dave has always been known for his diplomatic communication style.
Autumn, 1903: Ad hominem
Autumn, 1903: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
Spring, 1904: Hey English, if you return the Elgin marbles I'll ask Germany and France to back off
Spring, 1904: Little late for that, I fear. You’ll need to talk to the Germans in London. I’ll be lucky if they leave me with my sheep in Wales.
Spring, 1904: Wales must be liberated from English occupation. Long have the German people sympathized with the plight of the Welsh. Their freedom is at hand!
Spring, 1904: Hot new band is taking off in Liverpool: Les Béatles
Spring, 1904: Can Welsh army just join Germany then? Do you have to kill us to free us?
Spring, 1904: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
Spring, 1904: I’m free?
Autumn, 1904: Enjoy your retirement, mon amis! I hear Elba is lovely.
Autumn, 1904: Looks like I’ll be returning to Iceland
Spring, 1905: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
Autumn, 1905: Kaiser Wilhelm II hereby decrees that the German Empire, having honored all promises and obligations to its allies, is setting forth on a new era in its foreign policy and now seeks total global domination. It’s not personal, the Kaiser has just always wanted to rule the world. It’s one of those things. The Kaiser makes this announcement in advance out of appreciation for his allies’ contributions to the growth of the German Empire and to avoid being slandered as devious by the former ruler of England. Take this time to build whatever units will aid in your defense. Best of luck. (And for those who are unaware, to achieve a solo victory in Diplomacy, you have to have 18 or more supply centers at the end of a year. I’m seven supply centers short at the moment. If it becomes clear that I won’t be able to reach the winning condition, I’ll vote draw with whatever nations remain.) |
|
Autumn, 1905: As I predicted
Autumn, 1905: Ye gods! | |
Autumn, 1905: I, too, am going to solo! With my stalwart allies of England and Austria, I cannot fail!
Spring, 1906: Soon the Picts shall unveil themselves from their secret island fortress in the Firth of Clyde! They shall sweep east as I sweep west and we shall divide the map between us! We will decide who gets the victory with a contest of champions in the ruins of Munich
Spring, 1906: I wish you’d hatched this plan in 1902 when I warned you about Germany.
Spring, 1906: They would have expected it then. Now, we have the element of surprise on our side!
Spring, 1906: I’ll rouse the Icelandic hordes.
Spring, 1906: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
Spring, 1906: Looks like Italy will need to rejoin the game.
Spring, 1906: I’m going to unready order until Italy is back. I don’t want the turn to process while Italy is away.
Spring, 1906: Are they coming back?
Spring, 1906: I assume so. Chris has missed a turn or two, but has always checked back shortly after.
Spring, 1906: At any rate, I want to give him as much time as possible before we move forward without him.
Spring, 1906: I’m sorry. This game needs a push notification.
Spring, 1907: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
Autumn, 1907: FYI - I won't ready my orders until I see that Italy has rejoined. I want to give him time to get orders in before the turn processes.
I believe that will do it, as I don’t see any way a retreat can prevent me from having 18 at the end of the year. Thanks to everyone for a good game. I was curious why Turkey continued to attack Italy after I declared my intention to solo. If Italian armies had moved north to threaten Munich, I don’t think I could have won. Also, Italy’s assistance was critical to me taking Marseilles and Spain. |

Turkey offered a detente with Italy, but got radio silence and continued troop incursion, so felt the only possible hope was to absorb the Italian-held territory and wall you off before the end.
Between doing nothing and watching you get 18 territories, and trying a very narrow possibility to prevent you from getting 18 territories, I chose the more active path.
I honestly thought Italy had dipped out that time when I helped Turkey into Tunis. True, I was kinda *hoping* Italy had dipped. Since Turkey and Italy couldn’t reach an agreement I thought the anti-German bloc’s best chances was for Turkey to absorb Italy’s holdings as quickly as possible. My job was to die as slowly as possible.
It's funny. I had zero control over whether Italy decided to help Turkey and France or not, but that is the thing that determined the outcome. It always takes some amount of luck to get to 18 supply centers, and I just got lucky there.
FYI - To officially end the game, France still needs to enter retreat orders. |
