28 May 20 UTC Autumn, 2002: Hey, all! In about an hour, I embark on a drive from California to Florida with my two kids, 14 and 11. We expect to settle in on June 2. I should fairly constantly have internet on my phone, and probably in hotels each night. It is extremely unlikely that I'll miss deadlines, but I may show both more lag and more brevity than you may be accustomed to in press. If people want a pause for this until 6/2, I'm ok with it, but I think it is manageable without that.

31 May 20 UTC Autumn, 2002: All, I’m on the toad as I mentioned. I’ll issue the draw vote after builds. I’m never sure before the Defeat shows.

01 Jun 20 UTC my vote is in as well
02 Jun 20 UTC Thanks for the great game, guys. I’ll drop more of a note after I get settled in.
03 Jun 20 UTC This was a fun one for me. I became convinced of a strong EFI really in the first year, I think mostly because of France's persuasion. (Of course, I don't know how much of it was actually being driven by Italy, but France was convincing me.)

The most interesting moment in the game was during builds of '94. I had two major lines. Italy suggested a third that I thought was better. And then Russia, who I was darkly suspicious of given the fleet in the Nwg, suggested a plan that I liked so much that it is what we ended up doing. It turned what was a tense opening with no agreement on Gib / Morocco with Spain into an active plan to attack, but delayed and not obvious. Replaying the moves around Scandinavia, it is startling how well things worked with Russia.

At that particular moment, I was sincere about working with Russia. I was unsure how that would work with my EFI alliance, but one never knows how such things will pan out in the middle-term. It could have turned into a four-way, or Russia could have replaced one or both as primary allies.

Over the next couple of years, I pretty much lied to Germany and had him lower his guard. (Sorry about that.) Things stayed good with Russia and I started to move toward Spain. That's when the true strength of France's partnership showed. We both managed to analyze the Spanish situation with an eye toward the alliance rather than for individual gain. We went from splitting it about evenly to his taking almost all over it over the ackwardness of the fleet sitting in Navarra. We needed to roll that out and bring an army down from Bordeaux to complete that takeover, and that made it make sense for it to be a French conquest. I left just one fleet for support and that sealed trusting, clever and loyal Russia's fate. I had to go there. But not until I cashed in on Germany. The hit comes late in 1997.

After that, there wasn't much interesting about this game. I had strong alliances, and we could collectively take the board without much challenge. I guess the remaining question is if at some point I should have switched to go for a solo, and if so, when.

Probably that would have been an attack starting in 2001 after my builds (which were about what I would have made intending a stab anyway). France was very vulnerable, and I had the agreeable situation that Italy couldn't really act as peacemaker because France was between us. Also, Italy still had a live enemy to contend with and I didn't. Probably the best Italy could have done was to also take French centers and try to race me, rather than enforcing the triple.

Would that have worked? Look at the 2001 spring board. I don't know. My inclination was the think that Italy might well beat me to the solo, but I did think it over.

It was an enjoyable game throughout and I look forward to playing more with all of you in the future.
03 Jun 20 UTC Well said Britain! I think Germany trying to pin me and Italy against each other led to the alliance and, even though I'm not thrilled about the final split, am glad we got it done as originally planned.

Italy - I'm disappointed that you felt I shouldn't have more centers on a swap and stopped supporting me towards the end due to "me needing more support" than you or England, as I viewed it as us working equally to support each other and keeping things balanced throughout (see mine and England center swaps)
03 Jun 20 UTC but well played throughout
