13 Dec 19 UTC Wow, ggs. Phew.
13 Dec 19 UTC GG! I thought England and Germany both played quite well.

Italy, I gotta ask, why were you on my ass for so long?
13 Dec 19 UTC Good game y'all, that was an intense one haha
13 Dec 19 UTC Felt bad for doing that to Russia, but when I realized the draw wasn't going through it clicked that I needed to whittle it down
13 Dec 19 UTC Well played @England/France/Turkey
13 Dec 19 UTC Germany, was your opener a misorder?
13 Dec 19 UTC No worries, we’ll played.
13 Dec 19 UTC What about 'well played Austria'. I put up one helluva fight.
13 Dec 19 UTC France, I won't ask you to believe me, but I almost convoyed myself home to YOR in S03. I saw that LVP was open, but I figured it was worth the risk.

Russia, ggs, little sad that you couldn't fit in the draw. I enjoyed our schenanigans in the north. I wish you had seen Turkey's stab coming :'(
13 Dec 19 UTC Yeah, it was a misorder. The entire game I was kicking myself for it, I realized I looked like a total noob xD. Glad I could come back from it and E/F weren't too scared to be my ally from it
13 Dec 19 UTC Well played Austria ;)
13 Dec 19 UTC Yeah Germany, the only reason I went at you with the army builds is because you looked like a weak player. It totally sucked when that ended up not being the case!
13 Dec 19 UTC I did expect it, just was one turn too late, my bad. It was fun in the north, overall good game, I enjoyed it.
13 Dec 19 UTC Maybe I should have accepted the 5 way and saved some time.
13 Dec 19 UTC Nah, IMO one should always whittle the draw as much as possible. I'm glad you did.
13 Dec 19 UTC It would have done god for my sleep time for sure
13 Dec 19 UTC good
13 Dec 19 UTC Thank you Germany. And England, exceptionally well played. I like your Lazarus like resurrection from the brink.
13 Dec 19 UTC So sad that Austria so regularly gets stomped on.
13 Dec 19 UTC With the Black Sea fleet, it was only a matter of time before I stabbed Russia. I decided to wait longer than usual in an effort to cross the line into Iberia first, but with Germany and Russia making peace, there wasn't any more room to delay once Autumn 1910 came.
13 Dec 19 UTC You guys united with more vigor than expected, GG.
13 Dec 19 UTC I’m realistic Roy new to gunboat and I’m really trying to figure out Austria’s path to victory. Hope Italy goes for a Lepanto? And Russia and Turkey fight?
13 Dec 19 UTC relatively new*
13 Dec 19 UTC Goodnight everyone, thanks for playing.
13 Dec 19 UTC Awww Austria, I appreciate you paying attention to my far off corner of the board. I did think you did well, even with a non-meta opening ;) only thing is that you got stuck fighting your three neighbors the entire game. I'm hella biased towards R/A alliances atm, but I wish you had given it a shot, especially once Turkey reached Italy...say around A05. Could have tried holding onto GAL and sending Russia signals. But I don't think you did anything wrong, per se.

Also gotta thank Italy for snagging SPA in A06, which forced France to disband their units on my island.
13 Dec 19 UTC @Germany, start here for learning about gunboat https://brotherbored.com/diplomacy/gunboat-solo-win-intro/austria/
13 Dec 19 UTC but you got the general gist, imo Italy benefits much more from working with Austria than attacking them early (addressed in the Brother Bored gunboat guide for Italy), so a Lepanto is a common strategy

and with Russia being weaker than Turkey, especially if Turkey goes all out against Russia in S01, it's possible that a Juggernaut *wont* form, and then Austria can pick up the balkans and etc. etc.
13 Dec 19 UTC Thanks!
13 Dec 19 UTC pyxxy, please explain "non-meta opening". And re sending Russia signals, I tried everything I could think of. Please clarify; what should I have done. I also tried inducing/seducing Turkey in the hopes that she skirt lil' ole me, but alas, it was not to be. The injustices of this cold, cruel, Diplomatic world.
13 Dec 19 UTC Well, I don't want to talk above my experience. I'm nowhere close to the top-level knowledge of gunboat. But by far the most common Austria gunboat opening I've seen is TRI -> ALB, BUD -> SER, VIE -> GAL, followed by ALB -> GRE with support from SER. VIE tends to bounce and so has more options. People tend to like Austria's odds better when capturing SER and GRE right away.

"what should I have done" uhhh again I feel like I'm going beyond my skill level, don't want to talk out of my ass. Hmmm. In S05, you moved to GAL -> UKR voluntarily. You could have support held WAR with GAL instead, to signal an intent to ally with Russia. Russia might have accepted and worked with you against Turkey. Key word "might".

And being in GAL, you have the better positioning and can't be surrounded by Russia. So if Russia rejected the offer, you still had a fighting chance. And with Turkey reaching ION and being guaranteed TUN (in two moves, S05 + A05), I would have tried to do just about anything to try and push back Turkey with Russia's help before a Juggernaut formed, before Russia could see that Turkey was winning the Med and would be a strong ally.

Again, just my opinions. You could also probably ask people about this scenario/austrian gunboat tactics in the discord, or make a forum post, if you want more (experienced) opinions.
13 Dec 19 UTC To me your biggest mistake was not taking Ser snd Gre in 1901. You could ave taken those 2 and bounced russia from Gal, and would have lost trieste in exchange, which would have been worth it. Italy often cant steal more than Trieste so if you just let him have it theres a possibility of repairing an alliance. (Although that Italy was extremely lunge-y and short-sighted).
13 Dec 19 UTC Moving against Italy in 1902 was also a mistake for similar reasons. Everything you did in the first two years massively empowered Turkey, and you smashed Italy even after he had backed off, which ended up locking down several of your units, all just to keep Venice.

In spite of all this you still did pretty well. But your strategy just ended up overcommitting you against Italy and then Russia, leaving Serbia wide open to an ascendant Turkey with no enemies.
13 Dec 19 UTC Your "unit economy" against Italy was really bad, often using 2 or 3 units in order to protect Venice/Trieste, which are worth 1 unit each obviously. This left you without units to do anything useful.

Sorry for the spam, just felt like breaking down my view lol.

I made some big mistakes too, foremost of which I think was only building 1 fleet in 1901.

My plan was to wrap around Switzerland to hit G from the South, but Italy's fleet kept preventing me from doing such and I ended up feeling forced to stab England who wasn't helping me break into G.
13 Dec 19 UTC Please do not apologise re spam; I feel I learned something. And moving Trieste to Albania to Greece is quite risky when one doesn't know with whom one is playing.
13 Dec 19 UTC I don't agree that it's risky. Even if losing Trieste to Italy is a foregone conclusion, it's worth it.
13 Dec 19 UTC Really? Food for thought.
