03 Dec 18 UTC Spring, 1901: Moderator: (ghug): Congratulations on making it to the 2018 Gunboat Tournament Finals!

Finalists, you've been placed into five games. If you're not in five games, you haven't received each power exactly once, or you feel you've been put in the tournament in error, please contact me as soon as possible. There are three additional games in this round being played by non-finalists. These games are there to preserve anonymity as the tournament winds down, and their scores will not be included in tournament standings.

Games have been paused to ensure that nobody misses a phase due to the abnormal nature of the game starts. If you have not voted unpause by Wednesday, December 2nd, I will contact you and begin docking from your seven days of allocated pause time in one day increments. If you need a pause, please let me know. Since the finals have a smaller pool of players, any pause in this round will pause all games to preserve anonymity. Since the holidays are coming up, any pause time needed by multiple players in December will not be counted against your seven days.

Please contact me with any questions.

Good luck!

24 Jan 19 UTC Well played Xorxes
24 Jan 19 UTC Russia and Italy....but especially Russia. What the heck we're those last few moves? You guys basically threw the game.
24 Jan 19 UTC I mean, not to take away from xorxes' solo, but this game should never had ended up in solo. You guys had solid spots on the line that I was not inclined to remove you from, nor do I think my moves showed that.
24 Jan 19 UTC While I'm at this EOG of sorts here....Tantrum, why didn't you take Holland in autumn 1902? We were solid to take down 2WL and form a strong EF.

2WL - good game. Glad we could reach an understanding of sorts
24 Jan 19 UTC For mine I was interested in holding that line goldie - but when Nikola spat the dummy and threw himself into me it was all over and i could see no way to set a stable line in time to stop him. I have no idea what the hell Kench was thinking for most of that match.
24 Jan 19 UTC Why didn't I take Holland in autumn 1902? Because I expected you to try to take Belgium. I guessed wrong.

I spent the last half of this very short game trying to help Turkey win, because I was annoyed that France did not turn around to face Turkey, who I felt was on the road to a solo, early on so that I could survive and be in the draw. I feel that in autumn 1904 France should have turned towards Turkey and left me alone with my 4 centres. Oh well... well done xorxes.
24 Jan 19 UTC In fairness you did turn way too late Goldie
24 Jan 19 UTC Good game. Congrats, Xo.
24 Jan 19 UTC gg

Getting StP was weird, not sure what Russia was thinking there, but to be fair, he was going to be eliminated in the end anyway, since if I was stopped I would have given FG the space to take him out.

Germany's Pru-Ber instead of Pru S War or Pru S War-Lvn in S07 though, that was really unexpected. I spent time trying to decide which of those was more likely and it ended up that my choice between Mos S Ukr-War and Mos S StP-Lvn didn't matter.

Italy was doomed too, even if they had denied me Tunis.
24 Jan 19 UTC I don't think I turned too late. Had Italy not moved to Eastern Med and been available to retreat to Naples I would've been fine. And I wanted to give him space so he didn't think I was coming in to eliminate him and dove to Spain/Mar. Then going to Apulia in 1906 and not defending Tunis was very odd. (Kench not defending StP was even odder though....and disbanding GoB on top of it). And then had he moved to Ionian or Tunis I think I would've been able to take Tunis.

Yeah they might've been doomed, but from a tournament scoring perspective you want to prevent solos at all costs.
24 Jan 19 UTC I guess I thought that, with the German fleet in and around the area, an army in Boh could prove more useful in the long run, but clearly I was wrong. In any case, I was doomed from the minute I gave Turkey too much latitude early on, in an attempt to indicate a desire to work together. In all honesty, I'm still learning the diplomatic secrets of gunboat and how you indicate who you want to work with when you can't actually speak to them...
24 Jan 19 UTC I mean, army in Boh would've been fine if you had allowed me into Norway. It was very clear we'd need 3 on StP to take it back
27 Jan 19 UTC I honestly didn't realize the German solo was so imminent - I only saw the fact that Warsaw was going to be lost so I decided to hold the line at my home centers. Russia abandoning St. Pete was a total curveball though, especially when it represented a halfway decent shot at being included in a final draw. But whatever, I had plenty of dumb moves in this game.
27 Jan 19 UTC On the whole, I do think if Italy had any semblance of a strategy it would have prevented a solo. His game pretty much consisted of taking Munich, entering a bunch of support holds for several years, and getting steamrolled by Turkey. Not sure how he managed to make it to the finals but whatever.
27 Jan 19 UTC But great win xorxes! Obviously, it helps when Italy attacks both Germany AND Austria in 1901, but you can't pick your opponents.
27 Jan 19 UTC Haha a scathing assessment from 2WL. A lot had to happen for turkey to get the solo mate. Not my finest game, but laying it all at my feet is pretty stupid
28 Jan 19 UTC Also - replay the game - my attack on Munich was never going to be held - but France, instead of taking the hint decides to give you a breather and goes for me instead. Seriously goldie why the fuck would you attack Tunis instead of using the chance to kill off Germany? It should have allowed their E/F to destroy you quick smart, and Russia simply vacated giving Turkey an unbroken run to the solo, along with Austria who refused to defend and just threw himself at me.
But sure 2WL - its ALL my fault.

Also fuck you with your bullshit "how'd he make it to the finals in the first place". I fucking earned it - that's how.
28 Jan 19 UTC Whoah whoah, slow your roll there Wusti. Autumn 1902 I thought England was going to be taking Holland. There was no reason England would not take Holland in that scenario in my eyes. I mean, what idiot of a France would - once they're in Ruhr - turn around and attack Belgium? I knew you'd want back into Munich but I didn't want to let you, and in my eyes Germany was dead and buried anyways.

Spring 1903 I still thought he'd attack Holland. I was just moving back so my army didn't get disbanded. Then I moved to the channel to help him out....because Russia for some reason decided to just abandon everything and go all out on England (seriously Russia, why tf wouldn't you defend your home SC's?)

Then after the autumn moves I basically did a reassessment that said the only safe power to attack was England, so I didn't want to touch anyone who was on the stalemate line. From there, if just one...*one* of the Eastern powers had played semi-competently, the solo never would've happened. I'm not gonna solely blame Italy (Russia deserves the lion's share of the blame) but nobody in the East played well.
28 Jan 19 UTC I love this game! :)
28 Jan 19 UTC I'm happy to take the blame - I played an awful game. As I say, I'm still learning how to indicate what you hope to do without recourse to press. The fact is, that after Turkey's fleet build in Winter '02 I hope there was scope for the two of us to work together, which I aimed to indicate by being willing to have him take Sev and Rum while I focused my efforts elsewhere (ideally aided by him in Austria). I expected Sev (not Bul) to take Rum in Spring '03 as part of that working together but, by the time the opposite had happened, I was in no shape to protect against the move on Moscow and subsequent downfall.

Stupid? Possibly. Naive? Almost certainly. But I honestly made every move I made in full possession of my senses and with an idea of what I hoped to see happen. Sometimes that doesn't work out and sometimes once the dice have been cast there's very little you can do to reverse events.

God. It's a really good thing that this is just a game at the end of the day :)
28 Jan 19 UTC Kench - my last comment wasn’t directed at you - it was at 2WL being a bitch and laying everything at my feet.
28 Jan 19 UTC Sorry, didn't mean to suggest that I thought you were directing it at me! My comment was responding to Goldie's suggestion that the lion's share of the blame lay with me - which is probably true.

And my final comment wasn't meant to be a sarky response to people taking things to seriously, more just a jokey comment about games in general and the fact that none of this matters in the end :D
