30 Mar 18 UTC Autumn, 1914: What? We eliminated a second person? What a shock!

Thanks for playing, Germany!
30 Mar 18 UTC Autumn, 1914: Gg Germany.
18 Apr 18 UTC Well, not what expected. Good game everyone! It was quite the run around.
18 Apr 18 UTC At various points we had mentioned doing EoGs. Is that something people are still interested in? I for one would be interested to hear the rest of your perspectives on the game.
18 Apr 18 UTC I likely won’t have time to write up my thoughts until May. But I could potentially do so then
18 Apr 18 UTC I’ll write a longer one tonight!

I played like horsecrap and I’m shocked I made it into the draw. Thank you for showing mercy.
19 Apr 18 UTC Whoah....TIL this was a mod game
19 Apr 18 UTC And I felt bad about eliminating you after you helped stop the solo, France. So color me sentimental. It was actually really good on your part to not bother defending Paris or Brest. If Russia was sapped for builds, I might've felt like trying to take advantage of that. I mean, Portugal plus one more in the West and I could've tried for the solo myself
19 Apr 18 UTC So early game, I was trying to get any play to commit to attacking England and to help me out, but it seemed like Russia and Germany were looking to do the opposite of that as soon as they had any excuse.

So I played a defensive game as long as I could while encouraging everyone to backstab those who were attacking me. That worked.

After that, I played extremely selfishly and ruthlessly to keep my center count up and to get Russia as strong as possible so that Russia could threaten to solo win which would keep me from being eliminated. I tried to act as vindictive, unpredictable, and petty as possible so that it would seem credible that I would throw the game to Russia, and helped Russia get awfully close to winning on a few occasions. I did not want Russia to solo win, but I also did not want to weaken Russia at any point really.

I made various misjudgements and strategic errors this game, but it's hard for me to regret going ballistic later in, when I did end up in the draw I was hoping to get into weeks ago (5 way with these exact powers) even though Russia and Italy were constantly telling me they would never agree to a big draw many times.
19 Apr 18 UTC and thanks goldfinger. It did feel like a very close-run thing and, at the end, I thought it might still be possible that I would just end up getting negotiated out of the draw somehow due to my small number of centers and extremely harsh attitude. I was hoping for exactly that, that my final cooperation in holding back Russia while also keeping Russia as strong as I could without throwing the game, would maximize my chances of getting into the draw.

To be clear: at no point in the mid or end game was I really all that concerned about the number of centers I had. What really mattered to me was control of Portugal, Spain and Marseilles. It's extremely dangerous to ever lose control of those centers as France, as Brest and Paris are easily taken from the north in either a solo win attempt or just to finish of a weakened power.

So I highly prioritized control of those centers and tried to do everything I could to regain or maintain control of them, and to keep Russia as strong as possible without letting Russia solo win.

I didn't specifically care about how many centers I had because coming into the en-game with 5-7 centers could mean that I would be eliminated still in a 3-way draw or find myself in some non-defensible position.

Going back to the earlier parts of the game, the backstabs by Turkey and Russia were critical to my survival, and I'm just fortunate that I was able to hold out long enough to wait for those to happen.
19 Apr 18 UTC So when I said I was trying to keep my center count up while playing a defensive game, what I was trying to communicate was that I wanted to hold onto my centers for as long as possible and wait for the situation to change, which is pretty easy to do as France compared to most powers.
19 Apr 18 UTC Wow, I was extremely wrong about who was who.
19 Apr 18 UTC gg, thanks for playing all!
19 Apr 18 UTC I shouldn't have allowed this to become a 5-way draw, but here we are.
19 Apr 18 UTC My GR is probably worse than the rest of you though, so perhaps I still gain points.
19 Apr 18 UTC I'll finish my EoG thoughts later. Unlikely to be this week.
19 Apr 18 UTC I'm not sure if I can even remember enough to put an EOG together, this game took 6 months with gaps for pauses lol. I just remember this being a very typical high quality game, lots of changes and not a lot of people willing to commit to a long-term plan together.

The only thing that specifically stuck out in my mind was that one I was allied with Russia, I had to be in that 100%. I figured that France and England would want me to eventually turn on Russia, but if I did I would end up being eaten by both sides while I helped them survive and kept Russia at bay with my stab. That's exactly what happened, but I wasn't able to do much about it because of Russia's stab against me. In general it was a well played game, I wish I had been able to figure out how to work with Turkey and Italy a bit more but there were complications along the way there too, and Turkey and I never quite got physically close enough to make that a reality.

Overall you all are great quality players, and it would be a privilege to play with any of you again in the future.
19 Apr 18 UTC I would play again with this group in a heartbeat. Extremely tricky play. I got some really fascinating press from several players.

For example, when Italy did not have a draw vote up during Russia’s solo win run, Russia was telling me how Italy was playing for my elimination. I didn’t really know if that was true or not, but regardless of whether it was that was something really smart for Russia to say.

I wish I had played a loyal alliance with England from the beginning. I usually am one of those guys who thinks France and England simply have to go to war, but as I’ve gotten more experience in press games I no longer believe that. I have been doing much better getting loyal allies and specifically done well playing EF.
