09 Jul 17 UTC gg guys, had me scared with the Juggernaut
09 Jul 17 UTC GG! I am surprised but happy that you took the draw, Germany.
09 Jul 17 UTC although I guessed the stab so... :)
09 Jul 17 UTC I'm not sure I understand why you chose to suicide on me, England, when you were in an amazing position to take the solo win after Winter 1901.
09 Jul 17 UTC I maybe could've got a few sc's from england but it was probably downhill for me there
09 Jul 17 UTC Yea France you kinda got mobbed, sry :/
09 Jul 17 UTC haha amazing position to take the solo after 1901
09 Jul 17 UTC England you were irritating in Spain cos I couldnt get fleets there
09 Jul 17 UTC hahahaha Its not really decided then
09 Jul 17 UTC hahahaha Its not really decided then
09 Jul 17 UTC i feel bad for austria. 99% of the time they get triple teamed
09 Jul 17 UTC And Russia Well played, thx for guessing moves for support especially the one into North Sea. that was a good game
09 Jul 17 UTC yea theyre kinda in the middle of everything
09 Jul 17 UTC yea theyre kinda in the middle of everything
09 Jul 17 UTC I mean, that's the strategy I was going for Germany with my starting moves Germany: getting mobbed, and then coming back from that and winning the game. And you could have stopped that by ordering bur support pie -> Mar in Autumn 1901 instead of bur -> Par, regardless of what England may have done. Par was easy to retake and didn't change anything, but had I lost Mar to Italy that Autumn I would have had no chance, and you would've been able to walk into Paris the next year and hold onto it.

But then England's 1902 threw me for a loop. He could've easily won the game from that point.
09 Jul 17 UTC Bel -> bur, eng s Lon -> nth, edi -> nwg, Nwy to his choice of bar or ska, and no one could've stopped him, not after the builds of A Bre (!!!), F Kie (!!), and F stp n (!).
09 Jul 17 UTC @Germany: We had a good game together. Nice cooperation. The reason I 'turned on you' at the end was because I was afraid you would become a solo threat and the stalemate line that could stop you from winning had three of my supply centers on your side, which I then would loose. But I didn't really intend to take all your stuff; I just wanted to slow you down a bit to reduce the threat.

@Italy: I wanted to work together with you. Did you look at the big map and the Order tab? If so, you would have seen that I gave you a lot of failed support orders. When you didn't take them and Turkey was so nice to back away from my border, I switched alligiance to Turkey because I felt that Turkey would be capable to stop a German solo.

@Turkey: Nice that we found each other in the end. :)
09 Jul 17 UTC I was thinking about helping italy in to mar, but at that point had got myself into position to keep it as I had 2 builds and Italy was beaing down on you
09 Jul 17 UTC I am amazed how you are saying he could have easily won the game after the first year
09 Jul 17 UTC I feel like Russia is actually the better player :P
09 Jul 17 UTC @Russia me too, nice recognizing the german solo threat
09 Jul 17 UTC And yea I figured if I were to fail, and not be able to win it would end in a draw. However with the juggernaut coming I couldnt be sure that I wouldn't lose so many sc's and figure 40 coins was a good haul
09 Jul 17 UTC i never knew you could see peoples past orders
mind blown
09 Jul 17 UTC not sure if i like that though haha
09 Jul 17 UTC Yea same :P I was struggling to get my moves down in 5 mins tho let alone check a tab. Plus my wifi failed me in the last turn
09 Jul 17 UTC You couldn't have kept Paris, and indeed you lost it immediately. Any reinforcements you would've sent in were 1 turn away, and you'd end up with pic / bur against gas / Par, and that's assuming England didn't go for the great move of Bel -> bur. Had England played properly at all, I wouldn't have sacrificed Paris either in Autumn 1902. And the idea that it gives you an extra build doesn't really play out in practice: in order to get that build you have to sacrifice a unit and a tempo.

Italy beating down on me is key. bur s pie -> Mar means that I can't dislodge him from Mar, ever, since you're holding on to bur. I lose that SC for a good 3 years instead of just a season. Furthermore it encourages Italy to send his Tunis fleet in two ways: it gives him a chance at poking at Spain, and it gives him an extra fleet so he doesn't worry about being short of units. That ends up opening a serious additional front in the south for France, who actually has to commit units to defend from Mar + wes now.
09 Jul 17 UTC Well I like that I can look up past orders, because failed support orders can look very ambiguous. I always check the large map for failed support orders, and when I see one, I check the Orders tab to see what the exact order was.
09 Jul 17 UTC England was in the best position on the board Turkey. Germany had committed against me to the point where us two could not disentangle in a gunboat game. He had perfect information on all of his neighbor's intention: I built A Bre (clear signal in any Diplomacy game), Germany built F Kie A Ber (clear signal for either Kie -> hel or Kie -> Den & Den -> ska), and Russia built F Stp n.

Due to that army in Belgium he would've won the war against Germany, and not in the way where France ends up taking Mun + Bel. Germany and France would've clashed over the bur / Mun area for turn after turn, while England could safely sit in Belgium and nth, pick his targets, and go for weak spots.

The moveset I expected him to make (Bel -> bur, eng s lon -> nth, edi -> nwg, Nwy -> somewhere) would've let him retake Norway from Russia immediately without missing a beat, without losing that SC. From that point onward he'd be solely on the offensive in the sea war.
09 Jul 17 UTC I recognized that England would potentially be able to take Norway back and for that reason, I considered moving Moscow to St. Petersburg, but I eventually didn't because I wasn't even sure whether that move would be successful, and the army was useful in Ukraine, too. I was glad that England did not make the optimal decisions that year. Had England done the moves you said but I moved Moscow to Norway, England would still have lost Norway and it would be unlikely that he would make a gain somewhere else.
09 Jul 17 UTC *moved Moscow to St. Petersburg
09 Jul 17 UTC If you want to theorycraft the game with me (just because I love doing that kind of thing), here was my read on the game right after Winter 1901:

F lon s F eng -> nth, F edi -> nwg, F Nwy -> ska, A Bel -> Hol (A Bel -> bur would've been the perfect move here, since it ensures Belgium cannot fall to the Germans on top of making them lose a tempo, but it's hard to spot)

A gas s A Bre -> Par, F Spa -> mao, A Por -> Spa

A pie -> Mar, F Tun -> ion (Eastern pressure and no real prospects in France), A Rom s A Tri -> Ven (the only way Austria can attack Tri with 3 strength is if Bud moves, which means Tri can just retreat to Vie)

F Con s F ank -> bla, F Smy -> aeg, A Ser s A Bul -> Rum (A Ser -> Bud, A Bul -> Rum is the only alternative, and it only works if Russia orders A Rum to support, which is questionable at best)

F Sev -> Rum, A gal s A Rum -> Bud, A Mos -> ukr (there's plenty of valid variations, but this is the one I decided to consider likely)
F Swe s F StP -> Nwy

A Par -> gas, A Mun -> bur, A Ber -> Mun, F Kie -> hel, F Den -> ska, A Hol -> Bel (Germany was locked into their course of action after that F Kie build, and especially after seeing those F Edi A Brest builds. Not many options here)
09 Jul 17 UTC And yeah, okay, looking at the resulting board, England would be in a significantly worse spot had you ordered Mos -> StP instead
10 Jul 17 UTC Apologies for not seeing the failed support orders. First game back after taking a ~6 year hiatus and honestly have never been comfortable playing Italy, particularly online with no private chat and short turn orders.
10 Jul 17 UTC Haha Italy 6 years, not bad given. I thought I was bad with 1 year
